Then I'll explain mine. 1967 was the Summer of Love, the key year in one of my favorite genres: psychedelia.
1977 houses 3 of my favorite albums: Rumours, Bat Out of Hell (my top fave), and The Stranger, as well as many great punk albums. 2013 and 2015 are fir the same reason. The modern era hasn't impressed me very much, but these two years really stood out for me. 1987 had the opuses of Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, U2, GNR, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, as well as Dinosaur Jr. It also had Bad, the second best Michael Jackson album. Forgive me for not mentioning Sister, but I can't get into noise rock. 1991 was the year of grunge, when it really started getting popular. Nevermind, Ten, Badmotorfinger, and more. Plus, Loveless. 1976 was the first year I really ever started exploring. |
I'll listen to all of the music of recorded history and get back to you.
|
1966 - best year by far for soul and pop. Not that bad for rock either.

King Crimson: Red, Starless and Bible Black Neil Young: On the Beach Eno: Here Come the Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) Robert Wyatt: Rock Bottom Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Camel: Mirage Miles Davis: Get Up With It, Big Fun Van Morrison: Veedon Fleece Supertramp: Crime of the Century Frank Zappa: Apostrophe (') Yes: Relayer Sparks: Kimono My House, Propaganda Leonard Cohen: New Skin for the Old Ceremony Kraftwerk: Autobahn Roxy Music: Country Life Tangerine Dream: Phaedra Gong: You John Cale: Fear John Coltrane: Interstellar Space Steve Reich & Musicians: Drumming; Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ; Six Pianos Tom Waits: The Heart of Saturday Night Gentle Giant: The Power and the Glory Herbie Hancock: Thrust, Death Wish Pharoah Sanders: Elevation, Love in Us All The Residents: Meet The Residents Bowie: Diamond Dogs Henry Cow: Unrest James Brown: Hell Nico: The End... 1994 because that's the year I graduated high school and it's hard to deny the feelings you have for music at that stage in life.
And I mean, just look at this: Änglagård - Epilog Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II Autechre - Amber Beastie Boys - Ill Communication Built to Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime Failure - Magnified Green Day - Dookie Helmet - Betty Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley Marilyn Manson - Portrait of an American Family Melvins - Stoner Witch Nailbomb - Point Blank Nas - Illmatic Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York NOFX - Punk in Drublic Orbital - Snivilisation Pantera - Far Beyond Driven Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth - The Main Ingredient Pigface - Notes From Thee Underground Polvo - Celebrate the New Dark Age Psychic TV - Electric Newspaper Issue One Refused - This Just Might Be... The Truth Rodan - Rusty Sebadoh - Bakesale Shellac - At Action Park The Smashing Pumpkins - Pisces Iscariot Sonic Youth - Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star Stone Temple Pilots - Purple Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary Three Mile Pilot - The Chief Assassin to the Sinister UGK - Super Tight... Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman Unwound - New Plastic Ideas Veruca Salt - American Thighs Ween - Chocolate and Cheese Weezer - Blue Album And I've left out a lot that others probably consider great/essential. Even a given year in the 60s or 70s wouldn't have as many in the list. |
^Änglagard are getting mentioned far too seldom on MB.
Amazing band. |

Usually if you have a set of numbers you list them in numerical order from lowest to highest, that's if you have no particular preference.* I'm guessing like 1977 more than 1976 cause it shows up after 2013, more than four decades later. You can enumerate them no problem with the "Ordered list" function and show which year more than the other.** You don't give much information as to why you like any of those years. There are no bands, albums, nor mile-stones in music history for why you picked those particular years. How do you ranked them? ... and why? *exhibit a:

2013 easily. Major Lazer, Justin Timberlake, Studio Killers, Colette Carr, Ellie Goulding, Icona Pop, Selena Gomez, Lorde, Arcade Fire, M.I.A, and Lady Gaga did it for me. Awesome year in pop/electronic.
Was also a great year for K-Pop and Eurovision. So much nostalgia for 2013. |

I guess my favourite year would be 1979. Turned 14 that year and the music scene was so varied. In a typical top 40 chart you would see pop, punk, new-wave, disco, country, prog rock, metal, classical, reggae and everything else under the sun.
|
I was just about to post some 1979
|
My favourite year is quite close, as 2014 was just over-the-top-amazing for me!
Just a lot of great new albums from several of my favourite artists. The streak continued pretty good in 2015, and 2011 was a similarly good year. Back before 2000 I don't have enough of an overview over exactly what albums were published each year, so I don't know. I guess 1992 was pretty good: Debut album from Tori Amos, Faith No More's Gold Dust, a good Prince album and Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction plus a great sophomore album from Waltari. Can't mention a single great year earlier than 1973 for sure, even if I go research my collection. |
1989-1994 were the best years for me, I like the oldskool Italian and British House jams from that era

The winner by quantity according to my iTunes is 2009 at 332. It's a close victory though with years in the early to mid 2000s around the 250-310 range.
Makes sense, 16 at the time and had listened to some highly influential music at the time. |

Hard to pick particular years, but my favorite decade is definitely the 70s.

1976 was my first favorite year, but eventually I grew more into 1977 because of Rumours and Bat Out of Hell. Now it's the year of the Summer of Love. I didscovered most of the psychedelic I've heard from bands who partook in the whole Summer of Love deal. It's probably the most hippie thing about me. |

I've given Blur multiple chances. Just can't get into them.

Also missing Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible, Tori Amos - Under the Pink, The Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation, The Cranberries - No Need to Argue, Pink Floyd - Division Bell. 1994 is my favourite year for music. |
