Default Verification of RIAA Certificaitons

Recently, I became curious about RIAA certifications (gold, platinum, diamond, etc.) and looked into the "RIAA Certification" article on Wikipedia. After reading through the article and then examining the RIAA website, I concluded that, essentially, the RIAA bases its audits on sales data supplied to them by the record label(s) requesting certification for a particular album or song. This immediately raised the question of, "How is the accuracy of the data supplied by the record label to the RIAA verified?"

After searching the Web, I found almost no information regarding verification of RIAA certifications (third-party or otherwise). Does anyone have and/or know where to find this information?
