Peter Gabriel's solo work is far better than anything Genesis released.

Fight me.

Tried it several times, always sounded like boring, somewhat new agey pop to me.
I'm not even a big fan of Gabriels voice, although it works well with some of Genesis' stuff. Some, since I like just very few of their albums anyway.

I'd say that's a slightly unfair description, though there's definitely a New Wavey element to his music. I feel if you're a Bowie fan, Gabriel's solo stuff should appeal.

Welcome back to Occult Hawk, who I haven't seen since his excellent review of Strictly Personal.
None the less, I'm convinced that Genesis is not a good place for the hypothetical person in the OP to start. It seems such an arbitrary choice in terms of style and chronology. Why start with a rock subgenre from the seventies?

If you're going for rock, Status Quo or Buddy Holly would provide a better example of its power, though personally, I would sooner go back furthur and begin the story at the beginning, in a culture far far away.. Alternatively, try something in the style of Carl Orff, who explored simple music of near-universal appeal:

I wrote up Trout and Clear Spot, but thanks.

I certainly wouldn't go with Genesis either. As stated before I'd go with Perotin

Sorry! I was too lazy to wrestle with the Search function and check my facts so I got you confused with someone else, but anyway, you contributed to an interesting thread. Well done!

I like new wavey music, but I like the vocals in it to have this slightly strained, at times hysteric quality. The kind David Bowie, David Byrne, David Thomas have. (Wow, that's a lot of Davids )
I'm not saying Gabriel has a boring voice, his voice is pretty unique, but his singing is just too smooth.

Great thread otherwise, not sure what my answer would be though.
What terminology would you suggest? I'll admit that "healed" sounds kinda biblical.

Welcome back, btw.

Would you stop bringing it up? There's no need to keep stepping on the man's toes. He has so few of them.
