Default copywrite?

Hi, this is the closet forum I can find for this question. I can't play any instruments. I bring the vocal melody and lyrics. My question is I have recorded vocal melodies and lyrics over existing music from a video game. I realize I can't use someone else's copywrite music and say it's mine. I just want to use it in order to recruit some band members off of craigslist, at which time we would create new music, maybe somewhat similar. I'm wondering if the owners of the video game music could somehow own my new songs. I heard a lecture on music copywrites that if you use a sample of a song without permission, you don't own your new song you made, the owner of the sample now owns your new song. My issue seems different since I'm only using it to give potential bandmates my style of vocal melodies/lyrics. Thank you
