I generally flake on new releases, even by bands I worship. It took me probably a few months to check out Slayer's new album, and I haven't listened to it more than once or twice since.
A.) I'm lazy. B.) I listen to mostly pre-00's music, and almost no post-10's music. C.) I'm more into keeping track of new comics, due to the nature of the medium.

I overcome the problem by publishing annual reports of my acquisitions and music research.
When possible, I include info graphics and videos to make sense of all the metadata. I try to include ~500 of the most prominent artists of that year, as well as bibliographic citations to all literature relating to their body of work. My music journal is also a handy quick-reference guide to the most important compositions. The article tags and publication dates help map my analog and digital listening habits.
