A is for ... Arzachel. Album: Arzachel Year: 1969 Genre: Blues/Psychedelia Suggested by: Psy-Fi No, there is no significance to the fact that both the first albums were suggested by members whose usernames begin with P, nor that there are a total of exactly forty years between the two. That's just how it happened. When I see Psy-Fi suggesting something I know it's going to be interesting, as he seldom gets involved in these things, and if he wants me to listen to an album he must think it's worth listening to. I see Steve Hillage was part of this band, and this was their only release, so let's get into it. Well, from the off it sounds more like nascent progressive rock than blues to me. I'm not mad about the sort of stentorian diction of the vocal, but that guitar solo in the second minute of “The garden of earthly delights” is gorgeous and sounds effortless too. I guess that's Hillage then. Fades out too soon though but is replaced by a really lush organ opening “Azathoth”, with a vocal that reminds me very much of The Alan Parsons Project, much better. It's kind of almost like a hymn in a way. More great organ running “Queen St. Gang”, which I feel may be an instrumental? Yeah, and a very good one too. Okay, this is where the blues/hard rock comes in as we hit “Leg”. Vocal here is not as good as it was on “Azathoth” but it's powerful and very competent. Great guitar solo and some superb organ work too. One of the two closing epics is “Clean innocent fun”, which runs for just over ten minutes and has that declamatory vocal again, with sharp stabs from the organ attended by the guitar; kind of doesn't flow that well to me. Sweet guitar solo coming up now. Organ then takes over and it is amazing. The closer then is “Metempsychosis”, which sounds like the title of a Vangelis composition, and certainly starts off that way, with weird squeals, squeaks and crashes, various noises and effects. It's nearly seventeen minutes long, so I guess there's going to be a lot happening here. Getting going now with some great instrumental work, powerful percussion, thick bass, wild guitar and the organ driving it all along. This is definitely very progressive rock. Around the seventh minute it all fades away and then slows right down on the back of a sonorous organ line, with what sounds like harmonica and some freeform chanting or moaning. Slick little bass solo now in the eleventh minute and then it just builds up to one amazing crescendo to the finale. Superb. Really enjoyed that. Rating: 9/10

As always, your rules are just an excuse for you to be OCD. Good luck with that in this game.
Edit: Are you even playing this game? Almost certainly not. God damn I'm drunk. Edit to the edit: no, no, no, get me out of this hell! Not even playing the game but I'm having a panic attack. *sigh*likek I guess I'm gonna have to play this game now. I mean, I only have like, maybe five minutes of gameplay till the end of the level, so I might as well. Five minutes of ****ing with the alien. Hey, who wants to bull****!!! You think I'm bull****ting, but Im integrating this buoo**** into my system.

Hmm this seems like a slightly less interesting and more prohibitive version of "Love or Hate" with a less palatable template for reviews.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing after reading that nonsense.
Glad to see you enjoyed my recommendation. I thought you might like it (if you hadn't heard it already) since I know you enjoy prog rock. Nice blend of psych/prog/blues influences running throughout (IMO.) |

Nah, I'm gonna leave it as is, as a monument to my drunkenness.
