Ariel Pink - Pom Pom

Seems like something you might at least enjoy a little.

Where's the fun in that?

No his real name is Ariel Rosenberg, and that would count as a stage personal/project.

You OCD bastard. Does it really matter if the artist's first or last name begins with the letter you're going for?

I like when TH finds an album that he really enjoys, instead of trying to torture him. I've always tried to pick albums he might like.

A is for ... Animal Collective.
Album: Merriweather Post Pavilion
Year: 2009
Genre: Electronica/Ambient/Experimental/Noise
Suggested by: Pet_Sounds

There are certain elements in genres or subgenres which I prefer not to hear, among them being the words “experimental” and “noise”, and when both come at once in the description of an artiste's music, well let's just say it may not be a good day for Trollheart! So this is the launch album, as it were, for this thread, and I actually have to check these guys out later in the “Love or Hate?” thread, so maybe this will be something of an indication as to how that other album is going to go for me. Pretty weird enough opening, with a sort of rush of feedback and some voices (presumably electronically altered or distorted) chanting. Then it changes into a very seventies progressive feel and we're off with “In the flowers”. Sort of dreampop/shoegaze vocal then the keys go wild in concert with the percussion in the midsection. Not a bad start overall. “My girls” has a sense of The Beach Boys about it, accompanied by a very busy keyboard line, and “Summertime clothes” bounces along nicely, very upbeat.

Other than the weird start, I have to say that so far I've heard nothing that makes me think of this as noise, much less experimental: kind of more dream pop really. Like the odd little keyboard runs and histrionics in “Daily routine”, shades of Bowie in “Bluish” with some very effective soundscapes. “Guys eyes” however is a little chaotic and confused I feel, and in fact that's kind of how I'm feeling now as the album nears its close, like I'm being battered over the head with sounds, percussion, melodies and vocals that kind of all mix together but never quite come together as songs I'd really want to hear again. "No more runnin" is nice, laidback with a sort of Gabriel feel to it, but the closer is another annoying mess. As per usual, the universal acclaim this album received, including being voted the best album of 2009, staggers me. It's okay but I don't find it in any way special, in fact it's a little annoying and I doubt I'll be returning to this band. Except I have to, for the other thread. But unless that album proves to be far superior to this, that will be it for me.

Rating: 5/10

Of course it does. You're the one who got on my back about album titles being in italics and capitals. You think I'm gonna let anyone away with that? It always goes on surname, then forename. You're cataloguing your books, you gonna put Stephen King under K or S? Get real, man.
