Depends on how you classify "classic English songs" really. I have to admit, I know few if any of the ones you posted. So what genre are you talking about? Have they to be by English artistes, or just written about England? And do you mean British, because by saying English you're excluding Scottish and Welsh songs. What is a classic English song?

In fact, looking at your list, none of the ones bolded are I think English... (see notes)

Not trying to get at you, but again, huh? You haven't even listed the artists, so what are you trying to classify here? Just a bit mystified...

Well said TH. This really annoys me.

My favourite English songs are:

- Rose of England
- Jerusalem
- Land of Hope & Glory

& my favourite Welsh song is Hymns and Arias.

You can't beat Land of Hope and Glory (Pomp and Circumstance by Elgar of course). Even as an Irishman, my heart swells when the big runup to the chorus, as it were, winds up. I remember I was playing a classical selection many years ago, and had the speaker at the window. Then Elgar came on. Being in a fiercely Irish nationalist estate, I had to suddenly turn it way down before the rocks started flying at my window!

Another great classic English song is "Fantasia on Greensleeves" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Love that.

These are some of my favourite songs that are in English.

I think that only the first two are considered "classic", but I thought I'd throw Dawson up since he's become one of my favourite lyricists.

*waits for Batty to post a Kesha video.... *

Edit: if we're taking the criteria to mean simply sung in English, then my alltime favourite song ever. Ever!

Maybe. But that's a huge swathe of music there; hardly worth categorising it.

Anyhoo, my question remains, LuckyGirl: what are your criteria for these songs? Also, can you advise who the artists are in your list?
