That probably accounts for a good 80-90% of why I like how it sounds, but I still fell like there's just something about the aesthetic of the album that I really get. It sounds much more somber and melancholy than any other metal album of its time. It was also the first album ever that made me pay attention to what the bass drums were doing (they stand out a lot if you compare to other thrash metal projects of the time).

Nah. Death Magnetic sounded flat. Granted the producer was Rick Rubin, who is the king of flat production, but since Metallica didn't have the powerful songs to overcome that handicap (such as Slayer on Reign in Blood) the production was as much a handicap as the ****ty music.

I'd hate to start sounding like an audiophile, so I won't explain why DM sounds like garbage. Google has an inexhaustible source on that. Taste rules in the end, but the album does as a matter of fact give me a headache.

Didn't know Death Magnetic was considered bad here. I'm shocked.

That's the main culprit in the end.

Maybe not on Musicbanter specifically, but in music nerd circles more generally, sure: Metallica "Death Magnetic" Clipping Distortion - Mastering Media Blog

Naw it's definitely hated. It gets some love from morons who like that it sounds more thrashy than anything they've released in years, but from anyone judging on the quality of the music it gets the shaft. I'd rather listen, not only to Load, but to Reload, and possibly even St. Anger.

Well, flat production is the result of over-production usually. It's **** loads of tracks layered on top of each other then comprsessed.

ReLoad is a good collection of songs (past the first three tracks) and Hetfield never sounded better than on that album.
