The best example i can think of at the moment is Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water.

Starts off with that famous guitar riff, then the next bar the cymbals are added, followed by the snare on the next bar, and then lastly the bass line is dropped in.
There are tons of songs that do that. I always called it "layering." Good songwriting technique IMO.

This is probably my favorite example of layering - in this case it's pretty drawn out with new elements not really being added every bar, but in each new verse.



EDIT: Very similar technique done in Superstition. In this case it's really a case of deferred gratification and you have to wait through a couple of verses to hear new elements being added.

And last, but certainly not least, this has got to be the ultimate example of this technique. :D It's basically one long crescendo.

Some examples I can think of:

*Times Like These by Foo Fighters
*Hoover Dam by Sugar (around 20 seconds, contains weird backmasking)
*Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin (lasts several minutes)
