Default Early influences on Grunge music

Currently I have two bands to mention which sound as if they inspired the sound of bands such as Nirvana, Pixies, Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains. The first would be Husker Du, who were an 80s alternative/punk trio. Latterly, I've found a couple of songs (for example I'm So Green) on Can's 1972 album which have similarities with some Nirvana tracks (eg: Milk It) as with other grunge stuff.

Can you think of any musical examples from the 60s through to the mid 80s which have similarities/influences towards the grunge genre? If so, which bands/songs?

No idea how Grunge is supposed to sound,
but probably 'The Stooges'.

Ranges from anything like Nirvana to Pixies to Sugar. Think how their 80s/90s stuff sounded.

Not officially (must be because they're not from Seattle), I'm including them as they were in a similar area, era, and had similar influences.

You have it a little backward there. The Pixies were an influence on grunge, not peers of it. Likewise, Bob Mould, the creative force behind Sugar, was an influence on grunge in his previous band, Husker Du.

I would never say a band isn't grunge just because they don't originate from Seattle haha. I know you're not saying that. But I read that and thought to myself that if anyone out there has this thought in their head that a band can't be grunge unless they are from or reside in Seattle, well those people are way off base. Seattle was indeed a utopia or a place where grunge bands were abundant, however...grunge bands were all over the USA and even other parts of the world when it was a huge genre with a massive supporting fanbase.

If im not mistaken the term Grunge did originate from seattle but i can't recall a single band that influenced it, i think alot bands from the punk and Metal genre did, it wouldn't be far off to say even Metallica influenced grunge in a way however bands like the Melvins and Mudhoney and that whole seattle movement took all those influences and came up with grunge.

I can't recall a specific band that pre dates grunge, the only one that comes to mind are the wipers or Sonic youth idk..

I think the angry riff in I Want You by the Beatles is quite proto grunge. I could easily hear that in some Nirvana song, though I doubt it had any specific influence over the genre.
