Early influences on Grunge music

As far as I'm concerned, Grunge rock is basically a copy of this.

In fact, when it first started becoming popular, I was like, "WTF? This is just a re-hash of Neil Young."

If you asked me if the following song was a different genre than the above song, I would answer "no."

I'd never heard that before, (interesting how much that sounds like a Black Sabbath riff if you just overdrive it) and I'd agree really. Grunge is just a slightly more aggressive, perhaps dirtier version of that (Neil Young having a bad day haha).
And especially when it comes to Nirvana, in terms of structure to most of their songs, it's always just the old fashioned verse-chorus formula. There's nothing much new there, just presentation.

Take those two and you've pretty much got the basic building blocks for grunge.

Green River is oft-mentioned as an influence on grunge. And yes, they are from Seattle.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Nickelback are probably the biggest influences on grunge imo.

They formed in 1984 and never had the commercial success of what later became the grunge movement in the '90s.

I think Redd Kross had a pretty signficant impact on Nirvana.
