Guys have more testosterone which makes them listen to slightly more aggressive or raw music. Women have more estrogen which is more calming and nurturing. This would make sense as women tend to listen to more soulful stuff

While a genetic predisposition might incline a percentage of males to enjoy aggressive or raw music, I certainly wouldn't apply it to the whole.

I think musical preference is far more influenced by one's environment than by one's hormones.

Most of the individuals I encountered in my youth who liked rock were absolutely wretched people, and years of social stigma led me to develop a strong distaste for their preferred angst-based recordings.

I've also a particular distaste for gender stereotypes, so I'd hate to see "aggressive" and "raw" directly paired with the male gender.

Just my two cents.

This surprises me, especially since I'd say most people's favourite genre is rock. It's the casual music fan's opportunity to be an elitist for not listening to pop. Maybe you met more people who liked rock than you had suspected?

I attended a public high school until the first week of 9th grade in 1996. At that point the students were passive listeners, just boppin' to whatever was on 98PXY: YOUR #1 HIT MUSIC STATION! (2Unlimited and Technotronic kind of garbage.)

I didn't have access to media for the next 5 years and only encountered ~20 kids in that span, but by the time I graduated the music scene was absolutely horrendous.

High school students hit a cultural rock-bottom with bands like Disturbed, Dope, Drowning Pool, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and Korn. It was abysmal stuff.

I kept myself busy with plunderphonics, turntablism, the then-flourishing trip-hop/downtempo scene, nu-jazz, ambient and glitch techno from Germany, French house, micro house, experimental electronic music, the Balearic scene, and started researching the history of ambient music.

From 2000-2010 the MUZAK station at my workplace played Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Britney Spears, Ace of Base, Hootie, NSync, Backstreet Boys, lots of female country pop, and a ton of Daughtry and Nickelback. It was a living hell for 8 hours a day and I don't know how I made it out alive.

By the time I escaped retail hell in 2013, radio rock had consumed the last of my soul. The vapid gum-chewers with whom I'd worked were crazy about the NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC! stuff, and I did everything in my power to rid my life of commercial media.

I tossed my television and radio in 1999 and never looked back. I took measures to block any and all ad content from the web. I swore off shopping in physical stores (save for groceries at ALDI) to escape both their MUZAK and their customers.

Every once in a while I'll leave the house just to have a look, but I've yet to have my faith restored in the public at large.

In the Manor I have my books, my research, my writing, my media library, and my beautiful partner. It's a simple life, but I'm happier not knowing what goes on out there.

I hope that adds sufficient context to explain my embittered state about commercial music. Thanks!

Yeah, I don't think you becoming a recluse has anything to do with mainstream music. You're just a weirdo.
