Bands with appropriate (or inappropriate) names
A lot of bands don't, but there are some who when you hear their name you can kind of picture either what they're going to look like or sound like, or what they stand for, and if you didn't know the genre they operate in you could probably guess from their name.
Who do you think fits this bill? For me, you know what to expect, even if you've never heard the bands, when you hear these names: Slayer Motorhead Black Sabbath Manowar Cannibal Corpse Iron Maiden (yeah they're all working out as metal bands so far aren't they?) Twisted Sister What about the reverse? You hear Styx for the first time, probably thinking of doom or death metal (if you know your Greek mythology) but no, a pomp/AOR band Can't think of any others at this hour at the moment... |
Appropriate
Deströyer 666—These guys sound almost exactly how you think they'd sound: rowdy metal. Charlie Hunter Trio—Is a jazz trio. Surprise, surprise. Inappropriate Massive Attack—They sound like they'd be very in-your-face and aggressive rather than the chilled out, atmospheric band that they are. Bohren & der Club of Gore—I would expect something avant-garde, violent and provocative, rather than the ultra-minimalistic jazz they play. |
Inappropriate
Tony Danza Tap Dancing Extravaganza - It's not a sexy Italian guy tap dancing I'll tell you that much. |

Inappropriate: The Pop Group. But that's kind of the point.
