The Jam

Who here likes The Jam.
Paul Weller(lead)/Bruce Foxton(bass)/Rick Buckler(drums).
Superb tracks like, Down in the Tubestation/The Eaton Rifles/Strange Town
and A-Bomb In Wardour Street.
Anyone a fan?

buzster 07-18-2005 08:40 PM

After disbanding The Jam and forming the Style Council, Paul Weller lost a lot of his original fan base. Apart from Jam-like tracks such as 'Walls Come Tumbling Down' most of the Style Council's music came as bit of a shock to his older fans. I respect what he did with the Style Council but I prefer the "angry young man", that Paul Weller was in his Jam days.
It took me until his solo album 'Stanley Road' for me to show an interest again.

The Jam, where to start...

News of the World
Thick as Thieves
In the City
Start!
That's Entertainment
Funeral Pyre
the list goes on.....

Paul Weller's (solo) greatest song has to be 'You do Something to Me'

A greatly underrated songwriter, a national treasure

right-track 10-02-2005 03:04 PM

I'm bumping this thread to post these lyrics.
In my opinion this song is Weller at his best.
Written in the late 70s this is easily the most accurate depiction of the lairier side of English society...I tell thee!
And still applies today...the real deal!
Anyone who has never heard 'Down In The Tube Station At Midnight'...download now!

The distant echo -
Of faraway voices boarding faraway trains
To take them home to
The ones that they love and who love them forever
The glazed, dirty steps - repeat my own and reflect my thoughts
Cold and uninviting, partially naked
Except for toffee wrapers and this morning’s paper
Mr. jones got run down
Headlines of death and sorrow - they tell of tomorrow
Madmen on the rampage
And I’m down in the tube station at midnight
I fumble for change - and pull out the queen
Smiling, beguiling
I put in the money and pull out a plum
Behind me
Whispers in the shadows - gruff blazing voices
Hating, waiting
Hey boy they shout - have you got any money?
And I said - I’ve a little money and a take away curry,
I’m on my way home to my wife.
She’ll be lining up the cutlery,
You know she’s expecting me
Polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork
And I’m down in the tube station at midnight

I first felt a fist, and then a kick
I could now smell their breath
They smelt of pubs and wormwood scrubs
And too many right wing meetings
My life swam around me
It took a look and drowned me in it’s own existence
The smell of brown leather
It blended in with the weather
It filled my eyes, ears, nose and mouth
It blocked all my senses
Couldn’t see, hear, speak any longer
And I’m down in the tube station at midnight
I said I was down in the tube station at midnight

The last thing that I saw
As I lay there on the floor
Was jesus saves painted by an atheist nutter
And a british rail poster read have an awayday - a cheap holiday -
Do it today!
I glanced back on my life
And thought about my wife
’cause they took the keys - and she’ll think it’s me
And I’m down in the tube station at midnight
The wine will be flat and the curry’s gone cold
I’m down in the tube station at midnight
Don’t want to go down in a tube station at midnight

White Lies 10-10-2006 09:47 AM

They're my dad's favorite band along with The Clash. I love them too, they got kind of crap after a while, but their earlier music is amazing.

right-track 10-10-2006 12:39 PM

Down In The Tubestation At Midnight and Strange Town.
Two of the best songs ever.

Rhia 10-10-2006 02:25 PM

The David Watts cover is great, they do the song justice.
I don't think I can think of a Jam song I dislike actually. Aside from the fact that Going Underground got unfortunately ruined by all the idiots around me playing that "London Underground" version pisstake of it, 24/7.

tdoc210 10-10-2006 04:30 PM

why's it in indie, cause its not.
I have an album
Its really good,

right-track 10-10-2006 04:51 PM

Indie is as good a place as any.
Not punk, as they never really were, despite arriving at the same time (late 70's) and being liked by punks at the time.
Truth is, no-one knew what to make of them.
Dressed as mods, influenced by the Who and 60's R&B, but with a new wave attitude.
More like an 80's Kinks and a modern day Arctic Monkey's.

tdoc210 10-10-2006 04:56 PM

yeah, i have in the city, a british import =)

right-track 10-10-2006 05:04 PM

tdoc210 10-10-2006 05:08 PM

right-track 10-10-2006 05:10 PM

tdoc210 10-10-2006 08:43 PM

jonmarshall 10-19-2006 04:30 AM

my mates dad also used to be in them before they got signed (interesting fact)

yeh all mod cons is awesum, thats THE jam album

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-19-2006 11:00 AM

My sister bought me this for my Birthday a few years back...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Direction-Re...e=UTF8&s=music

Everything they ever recorded plus a sh*tload of rarities.

One of my most played box sets & not a duff track on it.

right-track 10-19-2006 12:28 PM

A mate of mine has that. Everytime I see it, I promise to treat myself.
Don't they have a singles/b-sides cd out?
I'd settle for that in the meantime.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-19-2006 01:24 PM

Yeah that would be Extras which came out about 10 years ago if I remember rightly.

Most of that album is on the box set, there`s basically only 5 songs not included on the box.

Pop Art Poem
No One In The World
And Your Bird Can Sing ... all off Extras

Other than those 3 there`s just the single versions of Start & Precious.

I`ve also got The Jam at the BBC album , 2 Cds of sessions & interveiws with a bonus live album of a gig for the BBC thrown in free.
Best 7 quid I ever spent :D

right-track 10-19-2006 01:39 PM

The material The Jam produced and put out as b-sides is enough to make most bands jealous. All time favourite b-side...Butterfly Collector.

This band never put a foot wrong, and Wellar pulled the plug jsut at the right time, before they were old, diluted and mainstream - the man is a ledgend for the way he's handled his career and there's a lot others could learn from him.

Oh, and hijacking the thread now: If you type 'A Beggar's Opera' into You Tube you'll see a few friends of mine performing a live lounge-esque cover of one of thier favourite tracks. So - thoughts please - no holds barred..

There's more stuff on these lads at myspace.com/abeggarsopera - including their original songs (not unplugged) etc..

oh, and here's what the reviewers say:

"…Their music that has this dichotomy of devil-may-care decadence and polished discernment. The two sharp-looking blond brothers share vocal duties, harmonising and singing great modern pop songs sculpted from bits of The Libertines, The Beatles and Dylan. Judging by their performance tonight [maroon]A Beggar’s Opera[/maroon] have the ability to rocket into stardom. Their rock 'n' roll scowls will soon burn in the hearts of female fans and one bright day their songs will be sung anthem-like at festivals."
BBC Berkshire

'…Early Rolling Stones and Berlin era Beatles - They make us smile.' Club Velocity

‘"...It's easy to see why few break into the mainstream with so many bands competing for record deals. [maroon]A Beggar's Opera[/maroon] are a different matter. It is only a matter of time before they are spotted and signed up. For now they are unspoilt and raw and our little secret.' The Evening Standard

‘[maroon]A Beggar's Opera[/maroon] are the new rock 'n' roll. Just you wait 'til the NME laps them up’ BBC Berkshire

‘…Excellent songs with reference points spearing through The Beatles, Bob Dylan with a smattering of The Kinks toward a more up-to-date, more melodic Libertines. They possessed the kind of confidence that a band who had been touring for years would have.’ Decode Magazine

[maroon]'A Beggar’s Opera[/maroon], the band that everyone’s talking about at the moment were fantastic live, a rare blend of alt rock and indie music left me and the crowd speechless.' Mario Gambardella, Killing April Records

Massive bump because I love these guys. Right-Track picked a good tune in "Down in the Tubestation at Midnight". Truly showcases Paul's superb songwriting. I'd definitely recommend The Jam to anyone.

My favorite record of theirs is The Modern World.

boo boo 08-07-2009 10:57 AM

I think they're pretty awesome.

Though Weller has played with Oasis and there's absolutely no way to justify that.

jackhammer 08-08-2009 07:36 PM

Two reasons why The Jam are fucking great!:

Bulldog 08-09-2009 06:45 AM

Two more reasons. Both of them from This Is the Modern World, which is definitely one of their best though more underrated albums.
