The YorkeDaddy Rec Thread

We all knew this was coming eventually.

I'll be taking recs until Sunday, at which point they will be closed down until I get through most of them.

Some brief rules:

-Nothing over 90 minutes. Preferably keep things under 60 minutes but I don't mind too much if it's a little over that.
-If I'm really hating your rec I might not finish it. I'll do my best to respect your rec but I'd much rather get to the music I'll actually enjoy sooner. This is likely not something that will happen often though.
-I'll only take two recs per member at a time.

Reviews will be longer depending on how passionately I feel about liking/disliking the album.

Final scores will be categorized as follows:

Garbage: 0-2/10
Hate: 3-4/10
Meh: 5/10
Like: 6-7/10
Love: 8-9/10
Ultra Love: 9.5 or 10/10

A score that falls under Ultra Love will earn a spot in my signature, including the name of the member that rec'd it.

After I get some reviews done I will create an index for this post. Until then that's about it for me now

Recs:

[Frownland] Jesus the Carpenter - Impressions - Like: 7/10
[Ninetales] Paysage D'Hiver - Die Festung
[Machine] Ash Koosha - GUUD
[Plankton] Steve Vai - Flex-Able
[mythsofmetal] Empyrium - The Turn of the Tides
[mythsofmetal] Lethian Dreams - Season of Raven Words

Alright submissions are done for now. I'm going to be reviewing these in a random order rather than rewarding who happened to get into the topic first. First review will be up shortly.

YorkeDaddy 07-12-2015 11:50 AM

lol well I randomly picked an album and Frownland's came up anyway, so I guess the first person gets the first review still :P

Jesus the Carpenter - Impressions

1. Radio Symphony: The entire track is filled with wild, deep static-y sounds in the background and I feel like there are a ton of little details in here that I'm not able to pick out. The track is surprisingly dynamic throughout with the changes being subtle but noticeable in the grand scheme of things. There's a really great use of various samples like laughtracks and radio noises. There are some parts I enjoy more than others, for instance there's some high feedback sound for a bit that I don't enjoy and never have. Overall I like the track but the length is a bit excessive at over 37 minutes

2. Impressions: Nice piano improvisation here. Way different from the first track, I really like the contrast. There's a sort of over-arching melody that I can piece together that's quite beautiful. Your frantic playing keeps it interesting and you never know what note you might hit next.

3. Reflections: Now some guitar improvisation. Interesting how the album moves from a mostly electronic collage of sound into piano into guitar for the final track. Just a really cool track here, not much else to comment on.

Verdict: Pretty nice effort from Frownland, although you could have so easily cut out 10 minutes and it would be something I could see myself going through more often. I definitely enjoyed it but there are some parts that didn't work for me and I would've liked more variety.

Final score: Like: 7/10

Just an update, and this applies to my other current project in the journals section: I'm currently on my second vacation in as many weeks. This obviously has made it basically impossible to get anything done and almost all my posting is on my phone right now. I'll get back to all this soon though, I seriously promise.
