D'Angelo & The Vanguard - Black Messiah

I believe I heard two songs from this on SNL, and they seemed pretty chill. I've heard really good things about this, and if it's anything like Voodoo I'll like it a lot.

Track 1: Ain't That Easy (4:49)
The gritty tones here are a really suprising change of pace from Voodoo. His voice is just as cool as I remember. Great opener.

Track 2: 1000 Deaths (5:49)
There's this religious sermon happening at the beggining of the track over this heavy drum and bass groove. The drums are oddly above everything else kinda gives off this roughness about the album.

Track 3: The Charade (3:20)
Those keyboards have like my favorite warped sound on them. The cascading vocals that were just happening were really interesting. Is that sitar? Nice.

Track 4: Sugah Daddy (5:02)
Loving that simple piano line. Slow and steady more and more instrumentation is being added around his vocals. Gives the track this sort of upward momentum.

Track 5: Really Love (5:44)
Oh those strings are beautiful. Nice little guitar interlude over this sample of a girl speaking in Spanish. I believe this is one of the ones from SNL, and it's by far my favorite so far.

Track 6: Back To The Future (Part I) (5:22)
I like his brand of very minimalist arrangements giving the songs air most R&B artists don't do, silence is a huge component to the songwriting. More good ****.

Track 7: Till It's Done (Tutu) (3:51)
Snare rolls>>>>>
By far my fav vocal melodies on the album so far.

Track 8: Prayer (4:32)
The synths on this album are great too, they've been keeping my attention throughout even though they're in the backround. Liked that one a bit.

Track 9: Betray My Heart (5:55)
Nice opening. This one is a little too low key not horrible though.

Track 10: The Door (3:08)
Oh yeah I'm loving this one. The chords are just ones that really get me for some reason.

Track 11: Back To The Future (Part II) (2:24)
I can't get over all the vocals on this album they sound amazing. Really solid little song.

Track 12: Another Life (5:58)
Piano sounds really ****ing great. Reminds me of the third track with that sitar. This one has a vaguely Stevie vibe to it especially in the vocal melodies.

Final Verdict: Not nearly as impressed as I was with Voodoo, but it was still certainly an enjoyable listen. A little overrated imo based on the reviews I've seen, but not bad at all.

Crusi****s - Wisconsin

From what I'm reading I'm just expecting some good punk music.

Track 1: Intro 1 (1:44)
Guitar sounds ****ing kick ass. This is a little different than I expected, not the straight up punk rock that I was expecting which isn't really a bad thing seeing as I like this a lot. Good start.

Track 2: The Mountain Song (1:23)
Yeah this is more like what I was expecting. Really nasally high pitched singing which is a style I'm fond of.

Track 3: Washington (2:08)
Man this is a great song real catchy. I appreciate the incorporation of the hand claps in the verses; it just works really well for some reason.

Track 4: Resurrection (2:03)
Usually phaser ridden guitars sound cheap, but they sound great in the context f this song. I'm really enjoying this so far, and it's not even the most unique album I've ever heard, but man the songs are kicking ass.

Track 5: Earth by Invitation Only (1:06)
I think this is a sort continuation of the last track, but faster. Still great.

Track 6: Laws Against Laughing (1:55)
Singer sounds like if Geddy Lee wanted to be a whiney punk vocalist the result is a little funny, but it completely works. Simple, but very effective.

Track 7: Pig in a Blanket (4:30)
Loving that opening riff. Something about this feels very grand in scope. This is an album that I'll need to look up lyrics on subsequent listens because I'm sure I'm missing most of it. I liked the use of the backwards vocal sample they just kinda threw in the middle. I have a feeling this is concept album.

Track 8: When the Top Comes Off (5:01)
The intro was really spacious before it kicked off into the main part of this. Really wish they would change up the chords during these weird passages in this song, but the guitar more than makes up for that. Woah what the hell is happening? Oh this is ****ing awesome, great lyrics right there too,

Track 9: Concession Stand (4:21)
Weird guitar tones going on. Mostly just a jam song, they aren't bad musicians so I don't really mind it.

Track 10: Wisconsin (2:26)
Acoustic guitars, that's different. Same sort of chords though. That was pretty alright.

Track 11: Artificial Competition (3:19)
He's changing up his vocals a little bit here gives a bit of variety. Song is catchy as hell let me tell you.

Track 12: Holiday Parade (1:39)
The riff/melody is absolutely undeniably the ****. By far my favorite song on this.

Track 13: The Savior (6:32)
The acoustic guitar sounds much better on this song than on Wisconsin. I'm loving the lyrics on this song; completely charged with anger. Great album, oh wait there's more. Oh I love this so much, BEAUTIFUL upright piano they should've used that more. Disappointed that ended so quickly, now it's just back to the normal guitar driven punk. Actually getting a Big Star vibe from this song, and I love me some Big Star.

Final Verdict: Man this is some great power pop/punk that I've never even heard of until now. The songs are solid all the way through, they're catchy, great playing, interesting structure to some of the songs. Not much to say other than, it's a great album that I really enjoyed a lot.

K-Dot-O-Dot- Trap Jesus Tape 1

1) Trap Jesus (1:56)
Yeah liking the beat. Damn good wordplay too, almost sounds like a more inside the beat DOOM. Those internal rhymes though.

2) Pink Flamingo (1:57)
Right into the next song. Seriously the wordplay is great on this; braggadocious and silly.

3) Trap Verse (1:39)
Do all of these flow together than? If so this feels like one song that just keeps going through different changes. I was actually expecting a trap album of some kind, but the beats are all fairly bound to boom-bap so far.

4) West End Kids (2:03)
Flows for ****ing days. I'm loving the hooks too; really catchy. D-d-d-d-d-d-d did I stutter mother****er?!

5) The Sticks (1:28)
"Bitch suck a dick like a vampire" this album is ****ing insane.

6) Trill (1:45)
The beats rule. Good mixture of jazz and a blaxpoitation soundtrack, and when you put that to these insane lyrics it shouldn't work, but it does.

7) Big Love (2:02)
Gospel influenced beat this time. Is this song about polygamy? No, it definately is.

8) Bench Press (1:39)
This one feels a bit more like a rehash at this point in the album a little samey. Not really a problem seeing the songs are so short, but still notable.

9) Freestyle (1:44)
Sex and sex and more sex with some cociane.

10) Granpa Gestapo (1:42)
Love beats like this, rap songs based around piano always makes me happy. I liked this one a lot funny ****.

11) Miami (2:43)
Ha! Loved that little Today Was A Good Day reference there. The guy featured 9th Uno actually sounds like one of the guys featured on Operation: Doomsday quite a lot.

12) All of the Above (2:07)
This is my favorite song from this. The beat, the lyrics, just everything is absolutely perfect on this one. I even love the little sample at the end.

Final Verdict: While there were a few hiccups in my eyes, in the end it was a fun listen there were even sings I can see myself having on repeat *cough*All of the Above*cough*. Funny lyrics, great wordplay, and a total mastery of great boom-bap beats.

Just seen this. Glad you liked it. I have it as a perfect 10, despite similar gripes at times.

I haven't listened to that in a while, but I thought it was a great little project. Very fun and over the top in a good way.

Bag It!

Free jazz? Jazz? I don't ****ing know what this is, but we'll see.

Track 1
Dirty sax taking the intro there, great tone. This almost feels closer to noise rock a la White Suns than straight up free jazz, grimy bass guitar under some intense percussion and sax performances. Loving this so far.

Track 2
Again this is much more "rock" sounding than I thought it would be. Killer riff and great energetic drumming that has a lot in common with hardcore punk drumming. Give me more of that guitar feedback please. Thank you. Total breakdown of noise and feedback right in middle that I definitely dig.

Track 3
Chill sax duet to start off this one, and some atmospheric drumming being laid down in the back. Down to just the drums now. It makes me feel like I'm in the basement of some sort of industrial complex, with chains rattling, steam coming out from the pipes, so on and so forth. Alright getting back to the full band again. Great playing and improv from everyone in the band. Nice song all around, only complaint is that the drumming section didn't stay for a little longer.

Track 4
Chaos. It almost sounds like someone is playing improv with only Windows 98 computer sounds. This isn't really doing it for me at all, no real dynamics just all out all the time, which I get can be fun to perform or even see live, but it doesn't translate to the studio for me.

Track 5
Now this I can get behind, more tasty atmospheric drumming accompanied by some sort of rumbling drone behind it. Not too much more to say about this, some occasional sax playing here and there, but besides that this is basically a mixture of free jazz rhythm section and drone. Okay I lied a lot more sax on the back half of the song. That was fun, not my favorite so far, but not bad by any means.

Track 6
Another short chaotic track. This one is a bit more subtle than the last, so that's cool; however, it's still boring, it just sounds like what you expect when you here someone say free jazz and not really doing much with it. Yep just bored with this one, luckily it's real short.

Track 7
Alright last track. Some minimal sax playing and not much else. I love the timbre the sax is getting though, reminds me of some techniques used in new complexity composition. The sax is coming into more of a "tune" at this point, some odd synths and percussion in the background. Very Set Fire To Flames styled. I LOVE this one.

Final Verdict: As the album went on the more experimental it got, in theory that sounds great, the problem was some of these tracks didn't translate to a studio environment as well as seeing it would have come across. However, there were some amazing tracks scattered throughout which made up for some of the pitfalls.

I actually downloaded your album a bit ago, and I've heard about half of it. I'm excited to hear the rest.

Edit: I heard Almanac; either way I'm excited.
