I don't think the masses needed to be filled in. I'm positive that any kid who lives in a family where one member has drumsticks has nabbed them and walked around the house hitting everything. I got my first pair of sticks when I was 18 or 19 and that was one of my first objectives. Buckets are an obvious choice. Acoustic guitar cases (empty ones, I'm not that destructive) are surprisingly good for it.

Before then they would just look at a busker or somebody performing John Cage's Construction and scoff, saying "pfffah! That's not a real instrument, you fool!"?
