Lord Loon - Kingdom of Coldness
Indie. It used to mean independent but has grown to mean a whole lot of things and with that growth comes a discerning fine line between pretentiousness and genuine love for the music; while that fine line continues to get debated, there is one album that walks that fine line and it is this one. And by golly it's good. I mean really good. It gives me hope for indie again after the last "indie" album I listened to made me dread the word album. This is mellow folk to the fullest combined with some low-fi effects and elements. It doesn't go in one direction opting to do some music just for the love of it; by shunning commercial things such as song structure and marketability, you get a 10 song album where most songs don't even go past 2 minutes. It's not even a collection of songs per say more than it is a consistent album where the songs are seperated for navigational purposes. I am amazed at the amount of quality that is put in there, whoever is behind the album has some serious talent and knows when to use his or her prowess. I felt amazed by the instruments being played and the ability being utilized; their playing utilized familiar chords yet had an atmospheric feel that is helped by the lo-fi sound effects. In fact if I had to define a genre for it. It wouldn't be lo-fi because it's not gritty enough and it wouldn't be indie because it doesn't fit that either. Instead it would be atmospheric indie rock, why? Just listen to it, it takes your state of mind and makes it irrelevant. All you want to do is just take a pill and chillax with these group of people who have no names and no faces which is a good thing because music doesn't need an identity, it has a genre, it has a certain way it's made but it has no identity which makes it easier for you to make the music your own. This is not someone's project, this is everyone's project and it shows on songs like "The Crank" which is lonliness at it's fullest and "Bigfoot" (one of my personal favs) which is fearful in tone but contains a message of acceptance in it's core body. There is no era of which this album is bound to; much of it may relate to the 60's or the 90's depending on what era you were raised in or feel like this belongs but this... this is timeless music right here. It shows that the overall construction of guitars, of pianos are able to make sounds that can't be plastered with a year, that may show influences to the past but is concerned about uncertainty rather than anything else you might know. The only thing that might put people off is that it's short but then again... It doesn't have to be long; you can just pop this in your CD/MP3 player, listen to it to relax or fall asleep or whatever and just let the timeless sounds take over you. Since it feels like one long song you won't grow tired of it until you've played it like 1,000 times which'll seem unlikely since stuff like this requires an appointment to listen to. It requires time, it requires effort, it requires personal investment which are all good things going for it. It's not just a musical disc filled with songs. It's an experience. Should you get it? Yes! It's that good and it taught me a few things about the indie culture. One, quality is with the eye of the beholder. Two, those that are concerned about spreading the experience are truly indie. Three, true talented indie musicians can make timeless material and this is timeless material. 10/10 |

Actually you're right; I misread the post date. Still, I reckon we'll all have our thoughts up by the end of the weekend. Must go work on mine.

ok so I actyally did listen to this like the day it was posted but forgot to write up on it. so I listened again and pretty much have the same thoughts:
I was quite worried off the bat since it was tagged with "indie folk" and that's usually a red flag for me to not listen to something. but this does have a pretty cool atmosphere to it. the vocals are pretty dream-poppy (tho maybe a little grating towards the end), and it kind of reminds me of The Antlers in parts, which is alright since I like them enough. but still the final product here just lacks something. the beginning few tracks were not my thing at all, these talons and fur were not bad and then a kazoo ruins an otherwise fairly brooding track. bigfoot is maybe the best track here (despite having more kazoo for some reason, tho less intrusive). then the rest is pretty forgettable. oh another thing I noticed is that the outros for songs were more interesting than the songs themselves, which was kind of weird and annoying. so ya idk its not a bad album, but not really anything id run back to either. which actually might be better than what I was anticipating. |

Okay, I was afraid of this. I can't stay a part of this club. My heart's not in it and I'm way too busy with other projects. I don't like to give less than 100% in what I do and I could not do that here, so please take me off the list. Sorry, I tried but it just isn't working.
Wish you all the best but you'll have to carry on without me.
