Covers Wars!

Yeah I'm at it again. Yet another in my soon-to-be-defunct list of "wars" threads.

Simple enough, as ever: post two cover versions of a song and vote for the best. It can be a well known or obscure song, but if the latter you might want to also post the original so that we know what we're judging the covers against.

Signup sheet yadda yadda yadda you know how it goes...

First up: I don't think I need to post David Bowie's "Heroes", but here are the two covers I want to face off against each other.

Peter Gabriel's orchestral version

vs
the version by TV on the Radio

Damn, I was just going to vote for TV on the radio...

Trollheart 05-20-2015 03:35 PM

You can still vote; I just saw zero interest as the thread slid down the page and assumed there was none. Maybe one vote will kick something off, maybe not...

Carpe Mortem 05-20-2015 03:41 PM

i'm very interested in this thread. But I can post maybe once every few days. Maybe give it time, you gave it slightly more than 24 hours before declaring it dead Trollman.

Also Peter Gabriel on this one.

Clefsong51 05-21-2015 04:51 PM

not all artist can pull it off

but some can, such as[Aretha-you send me]perhaps only the queen could've updated the classic[sam cooke]gem...of course our main man[luthor Vandross]and his rendition of the temptations classic[since I lost my baby]has become a classic itself,as I said not all can do it,but with the right respect it can be done.

Trollheart 05-25-2015 05:32 AM

Is anyone interested in this at all before it slips off the page? If not I'll drop it, but one or two people professed an interest so I just wonder....?

Carpe Mortem 05-26-2015 03:47 PM

Covers are a tragically underrated art form :/

Why does this thread need to be popular? Fvck it dude. Us four can play just fine.

Trollheart 05-26-2015 04:39 PM

Course we can. You're a breath of fresh air and a ray of sunshine, Carpe! :thumb:

Ok, so who wants to vote for who? Let's try to get this started shall we?

Oriphiel 05-26-2015 04:43 PM

I'll join as well!

I prefer Peter Gabriel's version, so that's where my vote goes.

:yeah:

Repeating for the record. Peter Gabriel.

Trollheart 05-26-2015 05:31 PM

So the current vote stands at:

Peter Gabriel - 3
TVOTR - 1

Oriphiel 05-28-2015 04:44 AM

I'm curious to know why everyone picked the cover that they did. Personally, I picked Peter's version because I thought that it worked a bit better, having a more toned down feeling and strings instead of electronics.

Moss 05-28-2015 09:47 AM

I was not big on either one actually. But I thought the Gabriel one was such a funeral dirge. At least the TV one had some dynamics. Although I did like Gabriels vocals.

Trollheart 05-28-2015 04:41 PM

I just like it when someone does something different, and for me TVOTR did nothing new with the song. I also like orchestral interpretations, plus of course I love Gabriel's voice. Easy choice for me.

Trollheart 05-29-2015 01:23 PM

FWIW let's call this for Gabriel. Carpe, you want to try one?

Carpe Mortem 05-29-2015 03:45 PM

Yeah dude I'm obsessed with covers.

Tomorrow Never Knows (Originally The Beatles)

Tough call for me because I fvckin love Trouble, but those dudes did a hell of a job.

Oriphiel 05-29-2015 03:56 PM

Heh, the intro to Trouble's version was quite excellent.

I think I'll have to send my vote their way, even though the other version was very good as well.

Vinnland 05-29-2015 03:57 PM

Gabriel for the win

Micco 06-01-2015 03:23 PM

INVERNESS gets my vote.

Also I have one of these in mind if I can be added to the queue.

Trollheart 06-01-2015 05:01 PM

Oh man, I am going to have to think about this one! The Inverness version is great: I couldn't get either of your videos to work, Carpe (though I think that's a thing with my PC, nothing to do with the site) but got them on YT. I love the way you see Inverness in the studio, and that effects pedal thing is great. On the other hand, Trouble's version rocks! Such energy.

I'll have to come back to you on this one.

Oh and Micco, you're added.

It's been tied for two months, so I'm just gonna call this one a draw.

My turn! I choose the song Putty (In Your Hands). Here's the original, by The Shirelles:

Spoiler for =D:

And here are the covers, done by The Yardbirds and Jean and the Statesides:

Spoiler for =):
