Are you sure it was me that recommended a Hip-Hop CD to you before? I think you're on about A Grand Don't Come For Free, if it was, it wasn't me, I'd have recommended OPM instead.

lol'd at the Do It bit.

A shame.

No it was Computers and Blues. And it was you, though in a previous incarnation, can't recall which one: Benteke maybe?

Oh yeah that would have been me. I rate that one highly.

Benteke sounds right, I was listening to it a lot at the beginning of 2015 which would have been in my Benteke days.

It's an excellent album. Pity this couldn't be a two-for. Oh well. Better luck next time perhaps. Maybe a Prince album? ;)

I didn't post it just to f*ck with you, would have changed it but I got bullied into it by Charles.

Maybe, which ones have you heard?

No I know that. That's ok; some people do but it's all the same. If I hate something I'll just say it.

The usual: Purple Rain, Round the World In A Day, Lovesexy, 1999, Batman OST, Sign O' The Times ... think that's it. Oh and his last one, whatever it was called, did it with some young wan?

Title: Ask the Ages
Artiste: Sonny SHarrock
Genre: Jazz
Familiarity: Zero
Recommended by: Who else but Quagmire? I mean, Frownland!

Expectations: As ever, it's the J-word that sends shivers down my spine, and not in a good way. At least it's a relatively short album.

1. Promises kept: Oh great! Mad screeching horns. Just what I want to hear. This is terrible, and if it's all like this, well, where's me red pen?
2. Who does she hope to be?: Well this is nicer. Guitar is very smooth, horns not so wild, more relaxed.
3. Little rock: This is better too. It's so much better when he lets the guitar do the talking rather than the mad horns. This is more uptempo but still very catchy.
4. As we used to sing: This, however, is just annoying, a real example of the freeform/chaotic/do-whatever-the-****-you-like jazz I tend to hate. And I hate this.
5. Many mansions: Not bad; a little repetitive but memorable certainly. Even the horns don't bother me that much.
6. Once upon a time: This isn't too bad, quite smooth, like the high tone of the guitar. Ah, whaddya want from me? I'm not a guitarist.

End result: Hmm. Started off expecting to hate it, but it sort of grew on me. Not something I'd be listening to again certainly, and I would say in general I more tolerated it than enjoyed it, but still, given the bad start not a bad end result.

So, Love or Hate? I'll give it a Like.

I think it's one of the most expressive albums in existence and is a good answer to our conversation about jazz emulating emotion from the classical thread.

Oh, and one day, you will grow to love overblowing.

Title: Paradise
Artiste: Pop.1280
Genre: Cyberpunk/Industrial
Familiarity:Zero
Recommended by: Qwertyy

Expectations: Absolutely not the first clue. Anything with “punk” in its name tends to give me shivers, and not of a good type. Add “industrial” in and you could be a shoe-in for the “h” word...

1. Pyramids on Mars: Certainly very dark, bleak and well I guess industrial fits quite well. Vocalist's style reminds me of Matt Johnson from The The, in fact it's almost like a slowed down, less energetic version of something off Soul Mining. Not too bad I have to say. The vocal seems to be buried a little deep in the mix, whether that's intentional or not I couldn't say, but it doesn't come across as bad production or even bad singing, so maybe. Little keyboard notes at the end are quite effective.
2. Phantom freighter: This is faster, with more heavy synth and bouncy percussion. Vocals come more to the front.
3. In silico: Very aggressive, powerful guitar. Almost dancy in its way, though probably too long at seven minutes for what's in it. Kinda hypnotic after a while. Must ... rate .. Green!
4. Chromidia: A bit samey, very growly and dark. Meh.
5. USS ISS: Don't think too much of this either. Very energetic yes but otherwise not a lot to recommend it.
6. Paradise: This has a nice almost ambient feel to it, sounds like there may be a sitar being used. Also sounds like it might be an instrumental. Yeah it is.
7. Rain song: Sounds like some sort of chant with just percussion. Interesting. Oh, there's some guitar breaking in now. This is pretty good.
8. The last undertaker: Lot of dark energy in this, real punch.
9. Kingdom come: Good powerful closer. Like it.

End result: It wouldn't be my sort of thing, but as a kind of cross between what I would see as maybe The The and ... well, I don't know what actually, but there's a good bit of Johnson in there. Anyway, as that, then yeah, I quite enjoyed it.

So, Love or Hate? Give this one a Love.

When I woke up this morning the first thought that went through my head was “Aw **** no! It's Wednesday and I still have to review Qwertyy's album!” This was not something I was looking forward to, not just for his album, but for any album, and it's become very clear to me over the last few weeks that my interest in and passion for this has fallen away. After returning, my initial idea was to shut this down, then I changed my mind and reopened it, and since then I've had no fun with it at all. Not only that, it seems to me that less people are interested in the thread too; time was, when there would be comments galore, now I'm lucky if someone even comments on the album of theirs which I review.

So here's where I call time on the whole enterprise. I've other stuff to do, but that's not really it. I've been busy before but happy to continue this on. But when it becomes a chore, a bore and a struggle to get through this, it's time to stop. So I am. Sorry if you're disappointed your album(s) won't get reviewed, but frankly and to be brutal about it, I won't lose sleep over it. I've given this a good go for over a year now, and I'm not prepared to slog on when I'm not enjoying it. All other recs will be removed and the thread's OP will be adjusted to reflect the fact that there are no more being taken.

Thanks to all those who did rec, and I hope I didn't slag off your albums too much on occasion, but I need to draw a line under this. It was always going to end some time, and that time is now. So thanks for your participation but

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 01-25-2017 10:02 AM

that's two punk rec's now that have got the TH like/love

i'll take it

The Batlord 01-25-2017 10:21 AM

He reviewed ICP and that's all that matters.

Read above. I've closed this down. Permanently.

DwnWthVwls 02-03-2017 02:50 PM

Doh, I haven't checked in a while.. I guess that's why it was on the second page. Are you working on anything else? I'm kind of a lounge lizard at this point, so I tend to fall behind in the music sections.

Trollheart 02-03-2017 03:05 PM

I'm working on tons of stuff, but it's pretty much all going to be in journal format. History of classical music, Movies journal (Shark Tales going on at the moment), Heavy Metal and Prog journals, The Great Discography Project, History of Prog, History of Ireland, and a lot of other stuff.

The Batlord 02-03-2017 03:10 PM

You should totally do a History of Metalcore thing so I can throw recs at you.

No. No I would not. And you would get far too much amusement from my not loving it. I'm also too busy: I can only get funding for so many clones a year...

You should still make a thread where I get to make you unhappy.
