I know and love both of those records and I can sort of see the Waits comparison with some of This Heat's percussion on some tracks, but I can't really see it in The Residents tbh. Experimental music isn't really your thing, so you don't have too large of a frame of reference to pull from and that often leads you to bringing up a Waits comparison even though there are many other better examples that make a Waits comparison seem kind of inappropriate. It's not a bad thing, we like you just how you are.

Okay maybe less dad jokes but otherwise you're cool.

Ja, as far as his studio albums go Rain Dogs is my favourite as well. I had forgotten to mention Big Time, a live album that's leaps and bounds better than any of his solo albums imo.

Okay, the accordion and the percussion at the beginning of this one reminds me of a cross between "Dave the butcher" and "Bride of rain dog", maybe touches of "Midtown", not to mention the drawled, almost drunken singing.

And surely you can hear what I would hear as Waits here? Singer even sounds like him...

It really was just a comment, something to say because I wasn't that much into the album. If anything, I was giving them praise, at least for that track, which I would have thought you would have been happy about?

Superb album. Definitely in my top three.

I am so into this.

Steph, are you saying you're already into his music or looking to get into it? If the latter, drop me a line...
Also check the complete studio discography I did on him at the beginning of the year in my journal.

Sorry for derailing the thread further into the Waitslands, but I'd like to strongly recommend "The Fox Theatre, Atlanta, July 5th, 2008". It's a bootleg from the "Glitter & Doom Tour", but it's a recording from a radio broadcast, so the audio quality is as good as on the official live album. But it's much longer, featuring a full concert, showcasing Waits in terrific form, performing some of his best songs. Not saying it's the only Waits album you need, but it's pretty much the only Waits album I really need.

How does it compare to Big Time? Because what you described is pretty much how I feel about Big Time, although I go through phases where I need to beat out the dustman with the Rain Dogs.

It has a rawer sound, the music is generally a little heavier and Waits is much "growlier". All pluses for me, but it depends on one's preferences.
Ribot sadly doesn't play on it and some of the great 80s songs are missing, but I still prefer it.

No Ribot = , but everything else you mention sounds great to me. I'll give it a spin. More Tom Waits didn't ever hurt anybody.

Oh I'm already a big fan, I just like Batty's line "lounge blues for the insane."

I will check out your coverage, though.
