Can't say I've ever heard any of his work. What would you consider to be some of his best stuff?

It's all pretty good, but Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, and Real Gone are my favourites. Pretty different from his early stuff too, listen to Closing Time to get an idea of his evolution.

Haven't listened to a whole lot of him, but I kind of see his early stuff as sort of like lounge blues for junkies and rejects, and later stuff as lounge blues for the insane.

Listening now, I'm getting a Dylan meets The Eagles vibe. Really not my thing, but I won't say anymore about it. Another thread, another time. I was just curious as to why TH always uses Waits as a point of reference.

We touched on it a bit earlier and my theory is that Waits is the most experimental artist that TH is familiar with so he always uses him as a reference point when he reviews experimental music. If he liked Zappa a lot more than Waits, I imagine we'd be hearing 'sounds like Zappa's instead.

I'm assuming you're listening to Closing time? Do yourself a favour and try Small change, let me know what you think...

That's not actually true. I usually just reference times when I hear music of a sort I've heard from him in another artiste's material. Doesn't mean he's actually responsible for that sound, but it's what I hear.

I would believe that, but then you go around comparing artists like This Heat or The Residents to Waits and I don't know what to think.

I'd have to go back and listen, but I definitely picked out one or two tracks on each that sounded like a Waits song. I can't help what I hear. You may not hear it, but I do. I'll check and get back to you.

I love Rain Dogs. Listened to that on repeat when I did my taxes earlier this year and it kept me in a good mood the entire time. I think that one is my favorite.
