There's always time. There'll be less recs to his metal journal. BTW, TH, will there be a schedule for recs to your metal journal, or just whenever you feel like it?

The album is on youtube, but it's in a playlist. Just search the name and you should find it. Here's the first song of the album, though. :)

I already reviewed an Avenged Wotsit album, so probably best to try something else. If you really want me to do it, I will.

You can move my Demolition Hammer rec to your metal journal. Surprisingly it's the only metal rec I currently have.

OK. Will do.

So do you want to move them or leave them here?

Probably in all likelihood will focus on this more, as there's a better chance of me hearing stuff I may like since it will all be Metal, though I imagine a lot of it will be outside my wheelhouse. Also, it will get more views for my journal, so overall I'll try to do more there and won't actually (for the moment anyway) keep to any schedule. I'll try to do more than one a week, if I can. We'll see how it goes. It may not even take off.

These two can both go in your metal journal.

I'll rec this one to replace.

Would be nice if you could review that album, whether you end up hating it or like it. But if you don't want to, then let me just add another suggestion. :)

is here, bitches! Time for another review!

Title: The L-Shaped Man
Artiste: Ceremony
Genre: Punk
Familiarity: Zero
Recommended by: Qwertyy

Expectations: Well you all know my views on Punk, so don't expect any sudden revelations!

1. Hibernation: I'm more than a little surprised to hear not angry guitar but piano, though it kind of sounds angry in its own way. The vocal is very depressed, seeming to mask that anger that characterises Punk, the singing laconic, even bored. Not the explosive start I had expected/feared.
2. Exit fears: Sort of reminds me a little of Matt Johnson; a more uptempo song but still not as in-your-face as I had expected. Rocky, sharp guitar with a pretty catchy riff sort of reminiscent of Echo and the Bunnymen maybe, or the Sisters of Mercy. Again not bad at all.
3. Bleeder: Good energy in this, but restrained compared to what I think of when I think of Punk. Admittedly I have very little experience with the subgenre, but this isn't what I had expected at all.
4. Your life in France: Another fairly catchy tune, lots of energy again.
5. Your life in America: This is darker, slower and has a whole lot of simmering resentment in it. Creepy.
6. The Separation: Back to the uptempo rockers. Like this one.
7. The Pattern: Not mad about this one. Can't quite say why, just doesn't grab me like the rest have up to now.
8. Root of the world: Meh, I find this one a little similar to the one that went before. Yeah, it changes later but I still don't like it much.
9. The party: Nor do I like this.
10. The bridge: This one is much better. Like the jangly guitar riffs and the lyric is pretty good.
11. The understanding: Like this too. Back to the generally high quality of the album with a side dish of self-pity and despair.

End result: When I first saw the genre on this I rolled my eyes and anticipated a hard listen and a Hate, but I have to admit, given another few listens I probably would end up enjoying this. If the album is typical of a particular style of Punk, perhaps I should be a bit more forgiving in my attitude. Not bad at all.

So, Love or Hate? I can't say I Love it, but it's a pretty higher Like than I would often award an album. Very close to a Love, if not exactly getting there. Sort of half Like, Half Love, so it's a Like Much better than I had expected.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-14-2016 09:07 AM

yay, glad you didn't hate it at least! the album falls under the post-punk subgenre so that's why it was missing all of the things you dislike about punk music :D

The Batlord 12-14-2016 09:41 AM

I'm curious more than anything since I don't remember anyone rec'ing TH any honest-to-god industrial.

Love
1. “Dead on arrival” had a certain charm and a little melody about it
2. AB/7A has proper music in it; reminds me of JMJ. Drowning man grasping for this straw!

Hate
1. The opening track: if I want to hear mechanical sounds and feedback I'll listen to one of Frownland's albums! Yeah, I see it's called IBM. Very clever. Still don't like it.
2. Well, “United” was dreary and boring and depressing as hell, and from what I read that was the most accessible track! Oh yeah, I'm going to enjoy this, I can tell..
3. Now we have people talking over what sounds like a storm maybe, or someone twanging a huge elastic band.
4. “Weeping” is appropriately sad; bores me to tears.
5. “Hamburger lady” sounds like it's being recorded while someone is mowing their lawn or trying to get their car started. Vocal's teeth-grating too.
6. Oh now this is all I need! ****ing kids wittering on! Je-sus!
7. And we're back to the weirdness with “E coli”
8. “Walls of sound”? Not funny!

End result: This was just a waste of my time. What a bunch of self-indulgent crap. Why did Batty think this is “one album everyone should hear”? I could have lived my life happily without this. I'd bloody rather listen to ten death metal albums!

So, Love or Hate? Oh God, let me see. This is a hard one....

Chances of a full review: 0/10

.

The Batlord 12-14-2016 09:53 AM

Oh yeah. I don't think there should be much comparison between the two though, so my rec stands. And how am I the only one who's rec'd him industrial albums?
