Title: “Lost in the depths of me” Artiste: Lost Horizon Genre: Progressive Metal Taken from: A Flame to the Ground Beneath Familiarity: Zero Suggested by: mythsofmetal Expectations: Prog metal is usually a good bet with me. Add in myths's recs and they're usually on the money, so I'm pretty optimistic. Woo-hoo! Good powerful, crushing opening with hammering drums and snarling guitars, then it rockets off in a typical, actually more power metal vein, but I'm not complaining. Hmm, once the vocal comes in it's really power metal, so maybe they're more in that style? Sort of warriorish, Manowarlike song. Vocalist has a great range. It's quite a long song (just short of nine minutes) but I do feel it's very Manowar-lite. That's not to say it's not good, but perhaps not quite as original as I had hoped for. Conclusion: I'd say a decent song, but a little too long for what's in it. Kind of lost interest halfway through. So, Love or Hate? I'll give it a Like, but that's the best I can do. Possibility of looking into the album: Dunno. Maybe 35%

Where do you get your ideas? More lazy, Wikipedia research? Lost Horizon are most definitely a power metal band, whether or not they have progressive tendencies.

Title: “Lurker in the moonlight” Artiste: Klabautamann Genre: Progressive/Black/Folk Metal Taken from: Merkur Familiarity: Zero Suggested by: mythsofmetal Expectations: It's an interesting mix of subgenres, one of which I know and am into, the other two I'm slowly getting into, so this could be something of an education. Or it could blow up in my face. Either is good. Like the way it piles right in from the start with a heavy guitar and then the vocal is dark and growly but not too bad for one associated with black metal. Some really good guitar work here, quite technical. Really nice harmonic passage in the second minute, some lovely gentle guitar work with a really quite discernible vocal, whispering rather than growling. I love the contrast in styles here. If it ends with something like violin or uileann pipes I'll be very happy, though I doubt that would happen. Still, a talking banana? Picking up again for the last minute with fast hard guitar, but other than the vocal, really more progressive metal than black. Yeah, really enjoyed that. Conclusion: This is the kind of thing I look for. Unique, different, interesting. Something I perhaps should not be into but am. Really impressed. So, Love or Hate? A Love for this one. Possibility of looking into the album: 90%

Title: Nowhere Artiste: Ride Genre: Shoegaze Familiarity: Zero Recommended by: bob 1. Seagull: Nice bassline, reminds me of something? Ooh! Like the group vocal, very nice. Uptempo without being too fast, lot of power yet somehow kind of restrained? Well, it gets pretty wild near the end. Impassioned, sure. 2. Kaleidoscope: Like its title, a little all over the place and maybe trying to do too many things at once? Not mad about this one. 3. In a different place: Like this one though; slow punchy ballad with a sense of The Waterboys or The Adventures about it. Has quite the celtic air. 4. Polar bear: Like this too. Kind of a staggered guitar (I don't know what it's called, maybe phased? Sort of sounds a little like an old steam locomotive) and a really nice vocal with again that celtic touch. 5. Dreams burn down: Reminds me of a mix between Big Country and Enya. In a good way. Throw in some Lightning Seeds for good measure. Slower track, very intense. Like when the guitar really punches in. 6. Decay: Kind of downbeat lyric with an uptempo beat, some great percussion 7. Paralysed: Like the melody in this one a lot. Slight sense of panic and paranoia in it. Great guitar solo. 8. Vapour trail: And a really nice closer. Is that violin? End result: Not, to be fair, the revelation bob's recs usually are, but well up to his usual standard. Just as Micco is helping me appreciate more music that is outside my usual wheelhouse (old r&b, soul, swing etc) so bob seems to be becoming my go-to guy for elegant indie albums that usually really touch me. As we say here in Eire, go on ya good thing ya! So, Love or Hate? Nevertheless, I don't quite feel I can give this top rating, but it's a very solid Love for sure.
