I always recommend people listen to this album. It's usually praise and one they'll mostly end up loving.

Big Star - #1 Record

I mentioned this in CAIHNH a few weeks ago, but we never reached a consensus on which album you should listen to.

Hey, don't forget I recommended you another one.

So you did. And will probably recommend some more.

Title: Deceit
Artiste: This Heat
Genre: Experimental/Noise/Post-punk (Damn you, Frownland! Again!)

Love
Nick Cavelike singing on “Sleep”
Kind of hypnotic rhythm. Hypnotic. Must ... kill ... Justin .. Bieber...Every ... body ... wins!
Really like the bass on “Paper hats”
Waitsy vibe to “Triumph”
“Independence” is pretty cool. Don't know any other band who have used the words of the American Constitution as their lyric! I like the drony, bored tone in it also; sets the satirical seal on the song.

Hate
Screaming singing on “Paper hats”
One of the tracks (dunno which one as Spotify hadn't the album and I'm listening to one of those YouTube full album deals) consists of nothing but noises and a voice that comes and goes, like someone constantly de-tuning a radio. Really ****ing annoying.
Last track is just too weird!

End result: A lot better than I expected. Some very good songs and some good ideas. Even some of the quirkiness was ok, some of it on a Waits-experimental level.

So, Love or Hate? Oddly enough, I'd put it in the Love pile.

Chances of a full review: 4/10

I've never really considered Tom Waits to be all that experimental. Sure, he twists things around. Experiments with genres to an extent. But surely This Heat are vastly more experimental?

Not gonna pretend like I'm not also trying to torment you, but this is still an album that any serious music fan should subject themselves to at least once.

I'm glad you didn't hate it TH, it's a fantastic record. They have an s/t as well that's far more experimental which I prefer, but I figure that'd get a definite hate from you.

I can see where he's coming from as far as Triumph is concerned because the percussion sounds right out of a Waits song, but I pretty much agree with your sentiment. It might just be that Waits is the most experimental thing that TH is familiar with, so that's his way to gauge other experimental records.

And another rec from the jazz world (free jazz to be specific :finger:). But hey, I find it pretty accessible for what it is and you might find yourself tapping your foot to it.

I have subjected myself to this album daily for over 20 years....and I'm just peachy
