I'm not sure how well I'd perform or write while under the influence of psychedelics but the hallucinogenic experience can certainly inspire art after the fact, the distorted sounds you hear and the distorted visions you see have very obviously influenced a huge portion of rock music and electronic music. Psych genres are basically founded on trying to emulate the sounds and feelings you experience on psychedelics. I spent a lot of time experimenting with psychedelics in 2012 (primarily psylocybin and salvia divinorum) and this EP ( Synaptic Obsolescence | Mindprowler ) was basically a direct result of that, trying to emulate some of the things I heard, I still get trip flashbacks every time I listen to it.
There are things you can only see, hear, and feel when your brain chemistry is forced into an irregular state, when you surprise your biology with funny chemicals that throw your senses off balance. Psychedelic art is a teaser into that experience, a nice way to re-visit it without finding yourself laying on your back in the middle of the street completely enthralled by the power lines swirling around above you.
