This one time me and my best bud split a bag of shrooms. Within 15-20 minutes we knew it was going to be a very wild ride. (the thing with acid and shrooms is that you never quite knew how intense the trip was going to be until the buzz started coming on. There were times I was able to be out in public while dosing and then there were those times when you just barely held on while you were peaking because it was so overwhelmingly intense.) This was going to be one of those times.

Fortunately we had my apt. to ourselves for the entire afternoon. We each grabbed a jug of water and sat in the living room and listened to all 4 sides of Peter Gabriel's "Plays Live" back to back 3 times in a row while not being able to even speak to one another coherently. I'd just gotten the album so it was the first time for both of us.

Over 30 years later we can both vividly remember that afternoon like it just happened last week and I can't listen to that album without flashing back to the buzz.

Are you sure you weren't both just staring at the cover?

I remember listening to Strawberry Fields Forever so many times when I was stoning in high school that I could listen to that track if I wanted a buzz.

I'm not sure how well I'd perform or write while under the influence of psychedelics but the hallucinogenic experience can certainly inspire art after the fact, the distorted sounds you hear and the distorted visions you see have very obviously influenced a huge portion of rock music and electronic music. Psych genres are basically founded on trying to emulate the sounds and feelings you experience on psychedelics. I spent a lot of time experimenting with psychedelics in 2012 (primarily psylocybin and salvia divinorum) and this EP ( Synaptic Obsolescence | Mindprowler ) was basically a direct result of that, trying to emulate some of the things I heard, I still get trip flashbacks every time I listen to it.

There are things you can only see, hear, and feel when your brain chemistry is forced into an irregular state, when you surprise your biology with funny chemicals that throw your senses off balance. Psychedelic art is a teaser into that experience, a nice way to re-visit it without finding yourself laying on your back in the middle of the street completely enthralled by the power lines swirling around above you.

Are you high now? You've made four posts, one after the other, in the space of three minutes. Ever hear of editing your post and adding in the line you want??

This exactly.

I've done a lot of different drugs and I don't think it makes me necessarily better at making music in that moment. Sometimes I get way too high and it consumes my ability to actually do anything. That being said, many drugs, especially hallucinogens, open the flood gates on what's going on in your psyche. LSD in many ways is normality taken to an extreme.

Music and appreciation for music is 100% a matter of perspective and when you ingest a substance that intensifies your perspective or changes your perspective, it's a completely new experience. It pretty much makes music all the more amazing. Marijuana for me has never been this lethargic drug. it heightens everything.

I listened to Hospice by The Antlers for the first time whilst high. That was a mistake.

I think that playing while high just removes your inhibitions and opens you up to taking more chances.

You've had the talent all along, scarecrow.

Every single tune on every album I've made was done after a quite a few beers, and a bit of something else. A typical day would go like this:

2:00pm - Get off of work
2:30pm - Start drinking at the shed
3:00pm - Something else happened
3:30pm - More beers
4:00pm - Go home
4:30pm - More beers
5:00pm - Something else happened
5:30pm - More beers
6:00pm - Something else happened
6:30pm - Pick up guitar, hit record, and track a rhythm
7:00pm - More beers while I listen to playback
7:30pm - Something else happened
8:00pm - Record a solo over rhythm
8:30pm - More beers while I listen to playback
9:00pm - Something else happened
9:30pm - More beers while I listen to playback a few more times and adjust some things
10:00pm - Pass out

Now you know the secret to my success. Use it wisely.

Just wanted to say too, excellent album Chula! First PG one I ever heard. I love the live version of "San Jacinto" and "Biko".
