The Discovery Chamber: Where Do You Find New Music?

Sorry if there's already a thread on this, I couldn't find it through a search.

Since most MB members are always trying to expand their taste and exploring the massive music world, I thought it would be a good thread idea if we shared where we discover new music from.

I'll start:
1. Musicbanter (duh)
2. Word of mouth, largely bandmates or people I meet at shows
3. Random blogs (I'm especially fond of this one)
4. last.fm recommendations
5. Chthulu (when a sacrifice goes particularly well he grants me the gift of an artist I haven't heard)
6. Spotify's "Discover" page
7. Forums/blogs/rym lists that turn up in "best [x] albums/artists" google search

So what about you?

Mondo Bungle 01-12-2015 01:43 PM

Last.fm and my two favorite blogs: Mortuus in Somnis and CUT & PASTE

Occasionally from the ALbums you're digging thread. And spotify does a lot too, I'll be on a page from a band I like and see a related artist and think, "Hey they have a cool name".

Trollheart 01-12-2015 02:51 PM

Oddly enough most of my new music comes from Download mp3 music from megaboon.com
I just see albums that look good or have interesting covers or titles, play a sample and if I like them then I buy them. Some music from here of course, then the rest of it would be accidentally, like if I hear it on the TV or in a movie perhaps. I don't actually go out looking for new music (other than the above) as I have already way too much to really ever listen to.

3. The radio, actually. There's a station that plays classic hits. Since I'm unfamiliar with lot of them, it's led me to check out older bands, like the Cars.

Recently I have been finding good stuff on band camp.

Aux-In 01-12-2015 04:53 PM

Cliffs: Pandora, YouTube, cellphone apps, researching artist info.

I began using Pandora awhile back. What I began to notice is that when I went to find the YouTube video of a song I heard on Pandora, there were all kinds of music channels, and they were all different. So, the song will come across on Pandora, then I look it up on YouTube, and if it's on a channel I've never heard of, I subscribe to it on YouTube. I call this "spidering" of my interests, where Pandora is the origination point and I add YouTube channel subscriptions from there. I test out different subscriptions and add/delete them as necessary.

I've tried Spotify, but that was a bit cluttered for me. It might just be that I'm not that familair with it.

Other ways I find things: Doing background research on the artists I already know about; you come across artists/songs mentioned in an article and check them out. I have found great suggestions in YouTube comments as well.

Tune-In apps were something I did for awhile. I really try to change things up and switch different stations to get more random selections. Keeps things fresh.

Music forums and plug DJ

Plug more than anything because I'm forced to listen to things I might not have remembered to YouTube otherwise.

2) Bandcamp searches
3) Music Banter
4) theneedledrop

6) Record stores
7) Flyers lying around
8) Wikipedia for new releases
9) plug.dj

Ninetales 01-12-2015 05:14 PM

other than this site bandcamp and aquarius records are probably my two biggest places to search through. and rym charts. ive got a bunch of different sites favorited on my comp for specific genres (black metal, ambient, hip hop, etc) as well as member rym charts. ive been using deezer recently and the suggested artists have yielded good results so far as well.

Frownland 01-12-2015 05:55 PM

Ah yes, compilations are a great way to find new artists.

ladyislingering 01-12-2015 09:14 PM

Last.fm has been particularly kind to me lately.

Micco 01-12-2015 09:35 PM

I follow a ton of old Hip-Hop Heads on instagram, they're constantly posting extremely obscure cds and records from the 80s and 90s on their pages. I find new things all the time this way. I mean the stuff these people are posting barely sold 2,000 copies when they came out let alone their popularity today.

The same applies with a lot of underground heads also.

  8. Seeing t-shirts, stickers, etc. that intrigue me enough to look them up
  9. Encyclopaedia Metallum

Mondo Bungle 01-12-2015 10:10 PM

I use the metal archives a ****ton too. There's was the first forum I ever joined when I was like 12.

CoNtrivedNiHilism 01-12-2015 10:17 PM

My new music searcher 5000 is as follows...

Deep, dark searches in YouTube catacombs!
Dangerous plunders in to LastFM labyrinths!
Daring ventures in to the belly of the beast known as MusicBanter Forums!
Downloading random bands I know nothing about from the suffocating space of the Interwebs!

...or something like that.

It's funny, I've never joined their forums but I browse the encyclopedia entries a lot.

Mondo Bungle 01-12-2015 10:23 PM

The encyclopedia itself is seriously fantastic, especially with the similar artists feature added, that's given me many a band to check out.

The forum has it's fair share of metal elitists and people who hate The Doors, but it can be alright and helpful. I still post there to this day, albeit with a different account than six years ago. A lot of others there are seasoned veterans.

There is only one member I know who hates The Doors, and that person was banned from MusicBanter. Hopefully it's safe for Doors fans on MB now.

Pet_Sounds 01-13-2015 05:53 AM

Anyone who claims to hate The Doors should be instantly permabanned.

Aux-In 01-13-2015 06:31 AM

I would really like to find YouTube channels that promote a large variety of new rock acts, particularly hard rock and metal. Any recommendations?

DwnWthVwls 01-13-2015 07:33 AM

1) MB
2) Pandora
3) YouTube via related videos.
4) Other people (rarely)

It's ok though. Go ahead and talk amongst yourselves. I'll just sit here in the corner stemming and mumbling. I'm just so sick and tired of classic rock it hurts. My hair even hurts.

As far as where I find new music... all over the place. Usually from places I'd least expect. I've been getting into some of the self released stuff on Reverbnation lately.

Goofle 01-13-2015 08:34 AM

1. RYM - Either looking through lists, or talking to people on there.
2. Musicbanter - As above.
3. Youtube - Reviews, record collectors etc.
4. Bandcamp - Searching tags etc.
5. Plug
6. last.fm - Looking through other people's listening history.

Pretty much it really, anything else is chance.

There's no regularly active punk plug.dj everytime I look, at least in my timezone :c.

You know, it's easy to find music I like, but it's so difficult to find music I love.
It always happens really unexpected. Sometimes when listening to something over time, sometimes in an instant the first time I listen to it.

James 01-14-2015 08:27 AM

The Quietus and Tiny Mix Tapes consistently turn me onto the most interesting, onscure stuff. Everything else I get from here, RYM, or listening to BBC 6 Music.

Yep, agreed. Last album I fell in love with was Loveless, very recently. Been long since an album has made me instantly love it like that.

No recs on that kind of room, sorry man. But there's a great one called eclectica something that plays a huge variety of tunes with good regulars.

Why is Punk not more popular? :c.

HellCell 01-15-2015 05:09 AM

For me is more so of an issue of finding the time and interest to discover music. If so I got more resources than I can digest through the internet.

If you want examples, Last.fm, forums (not just this one), YouTube, (hit hotlinks on the side or dive into the whole channel).

Both of these sites are ace! Especially love The Quietus, their articles are a bit better written than TMT (depending on how much you love TMT's snark, I guess).

I also frequently peruse Resident Advisor (electronic focus), The Wild Honey Pie (indie / folk focus), and a couple other music forums, in addition to KEXP.org's Song of the Day podcast. The rest is just luck and patience.

Josef K 01-16-2015 07:05 PM

Yeah, Tiny Mix Tapes is great - I really appreciate that they're willing to give their writers a lot of freedom and use the full range of their grades (as opposed to, like, Pitchfork, where three-quarters of stuff gets somewhere from a five to an eight).

I miss the old days of P4K giving people 0s and instead of a review just posting a youtube video of a monkey drinking its own pee. They're basically Rolling Stone 2.0 now.

Norg 01-18-2015 12:24 PM

I try and go to the record stores well at least the 5 we have left in this city and dig through the hole store to find some music post some stuff on my phone and buy some stuff the music mags there also have a wealth of info
