other than this site bandcamp and aquarius records are probably my two biggest places to search through. and rym charts. ive got a bunch of different sites favorited on my comp for specific genres (black metal, ambient, hip hop, etc) as well as member rym charts. ive been using deezer recently and the suggested artists have yielded good results so far as well.

Ah yes, compilations are a great way to find new artists.

Last.fm has been particularly kind to me lately.

I follow a ton of old Hip-Hop Heads on instagram, they're constantly posting extremely obscure cds and records from the 80s and 90s on their pages. I find new things all the time this way. I mean the stuff these people are posting barely sold 2,000 copies when they came out let alone their popularity today.

The same applies with a lot of underground heads also.

  1. Wikipedia
  2. Hearing something used in a movie, TV show, podcast, etc. and looking it up
  3. MusicBanter
  4. Friends, coworkers, etc.
  5. Reading random articles about music
  6. Google
  7. Last.fm, iTunes Radio, etc.
  8. Seeing t-shirts, stickers, etc. that intrigue me enough to look them up
  9. Encyclopaedia Metallum

I use the metal archives a ****ton too. There's was the first forum I ever joined when I was like 12.

My new music searcher 5000 is as follows...

Deep, dark searches in YouTube catacombs!
Dangerous plunders in to LastFM labyrinths!
Daring ventures in to the belly of the beast known as MusicBanter Forums!
Downloading random bands I know nothing about from the suffocating space of the Interwebs!

...or something like that.

It's funny, I've never joined their forums but I browse the encyclopedia entries a lot.

Mondo Bungle 01-12-2015 10:23 PM

The encyclopedia itself is seriously fantastic, especially with the similar artists feature added, that's given me many a band to check out.

The forum has it's fair share of metal elitists and people who hate The Doors, but it can be alright and helpful. I still post there to this day, albeit with a different account than six years ago. A lot of others there are seasoned veterans.
