Those are all great artists though (or, the Microphones were, the Magnetic Fields were through the first third of 69 Love Songs, and Why? have a couple really good albums IMO). Is the criticism just that there's not enough range in Overcast/bulbasaur/whoever's taste, or is it that you don't like the bands you just named?

Dude Magnetic Fields are better than that. The first third is the strongest, but the whole album is worthwhile and their early albums like The Wayward Bus and Distant Plastic Trees are great too!

There's no criticism, that's just how I feel about their tastes. Like I said, they've got good taste and I like everything that they like pretty much (that I know). I think they have a fair enough range too. The same could be said for someone like Frownland, he's got one of the best tastes here imo, but I almost can't handle how experimental it is, just all the time.

ContrivedNihilism: I forget a lot of what you've posted, but just going back through your posts, and looking at some of the bands you rep like Bush, Soilwork, Five Finger Death Punch, Chavelle, Finch, Incubus, Machine Head, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Pearl Jam, Godsmack, Chevelle, Lacuna Coil, and Tool, it seems like you have a generic, entry-level appreciation of modern rock /metal that makes me think you're a teenager who needs a few years to really develop your taste in music. The other option being that you're one of those people who regularly listens to FM rock radio but thinks they like underground music just cause they go to Mayhem Fest every summer. Don't be that guy.

Spoiler for Learn...:
For modern rock that doesn't suck...

And for metal, Exodus are older than dirt, but they (along with Overkill) brought thrash kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century with their Tempo of the Damned album. Machine Head might have more diversity, but nothing they've released since their debut can touch this **** for sheer viciousness.

I have nothing to say against Briks that wouldn't violate my rule against jerk fests, except that he's still at that point where he's developing his tastes around MB member recs, but I imagine in a couple years I'm gonna start ragging on him for something or other.

ladyislingering: Fabulous taste in general, and one of the closest to my own on MB. However, I feel you'd really enjoy a number of current bands if you gave them a shot. Including my current co-favourite:

Spoiler for It feels like I only go backwards, baby:

This is why I need to post more of what I listen to, because I have both of those bands on my iPhone for work. Because I have more diversity than I let on. I hate the radio, just so you know, I never listen to it. My ears threaten to burst.

However Batlord, I think that I do listen to a lot of generic bands, you're right there. Part of me is a bit intimidated to branch out more than I have in to other kinds of music, there's so much out there. I should get over that though, because I do agree with you that I need to develop my taste, because it is flawed to hell. I know I usually don't comment on rec's people give me, but PM me a bunch of bands man, I do listen to everything people suggest. I came to this forum to develop my taste.

So help me along, everyone!

Wolfmother is some pretty boring and generic retro-rock. Here's a modern rock recommendation that isn't lame

Your first rec was sweet, even if it couldn't touch Blind Guardian, but I'm not on enough sad pills to dig your boring second rec. I'll see that and raise you the Arctic Monkeys. Probably should have posted this instead of Wolfmother.
