Is it just me, or has 2014 really been lacking in good music?

Ethereal Riffian are described as playing "doom, experimental, progressive, metal, psychedelic, stoner." A lot of those styles were developed in previous decades.

Heck, I even seen Jazzbos elevate themselves over Rock and Rollers. I don't see where mainstream is a sacred cow that this elevation can't be done to. I don't see why people who say "the popular American mainstream music is ****" should be singled out when it happens all the time with all kind of music genres. If someone bust on mainstream music once in a while I really don't care. Cause I got it all my life for liking the other stuff people ignore and/or unpopular music.

OP here, sorry for the late reply as I am very new to this site and I didn't expect my post to get as much attention as it did.

Yes, I have listened to other albums from 2014 like Modern Baseball's, The War On Drugs', Sun Kill Moon's, Weezer's, Run the Jewels', St. Vincent's, Spoon's, Flying Lotus', Jack White's, Parquet Courts, FKA twigs, and many others. I just believe that none of the ones I have listened to compare to some of the top albums 2013. I'm sure I'm just not digging enough, so if anyone has some albums they believe are better than the 2013 ones I listed I'd be more than willing to check them out. I do all my "digging" through spotify basically so I'm sure that has its restrictions.

Also, I suppose the artists I listed can be considered mainstream, which is partially because I just picked my favorite albums from some "Best Albums of 2013/2014" lists online and partially because I am just unaware of smaller artists.

My point is that elevating yourself above any form of music or claiming something that is objectively worse is pretentious, and annoying. Besides, complaining about mainstream music and calling it bad is like saying the sky is blue. I'm tired of people going on about it, and nowhere did OP say ANYTHING about mainstream music even if some of the musicians listed are mainstream. It was aimed at the general state of music as a whole. That's all I was trying to say, but people gotta be readin' between the lines.

Well that's ok then but like Mondo I don't see anything about mainstream or popular in the title or the OP. Have you heard any albums released this year that you liked? More underground stuff I'm guessing because you're so kewl and nonconformist.

The OP listed examples of the type of artists he was referring too and they were mostly mainstream. So he is referring to mainstream music.

You know that I listen to popular music and I dont have a problem with it. I just think the current pop scene is bad. So not sure where this post is coming from...
