Because they tend to bring it up when it's not really relevant to the conversation, as you have in this thread.

Because most of the time people do it to elevate themselves over people who do like mainstream music because they don't agree with/like it. I don't go around telling people that this or that sucks, I keep it to myself because I don't like people to feel bad for liking something they may genuinely enjoy for whatever reason. I will in fact state my opinion on an artist on why I do and don't like them when asked, but I also state that it's only my opinion, and music is completely subjective. I just hate seeing people say things like "the popular American mainstream music is ****" making it seem objective. It's probably one of the most frustrating things to deal with when you're trying to talk to someone about music.

I think you forget the other-side where people make snide remarks if someone says they like certain older bands. I think it goes both ways. It's not just people saying "mainstream is stinky pooh." If someones say "hey I like The Beatles or The Led Zeppelin" people go all snarky saying "They are the Rock and Roll dullards." Think of it this way... if you don't go broke seeing every mainstream Top 40 act in concert this year because they are all the greatest thing since slice bread, than hey there might be some credence to the statement that "the mainstream music is poopity doo." Is there a certain decorum dealing with how you should express yourself when talking about music you don't like? ... maybe. I guess if you don't want to step on other people's toes. But is this sophistication universal and pertains only to criticism of just mainstream music? I've seen Proggers elevate themselves over Punkers, Metalheaders elevate themselves over Grungers. Heck, I even seen Jazzbos elevate themselves over Rock and Rollers. I don't see where mainstream is a sacred cow that this elevation can't be done to. I don't see why people who say "the popular American mainstream music is ****" should be singled out when it happens all the time with all kind of music genres. If someone bust on mainstream music once in a while I really don't care. Cause I got it all my life for liking the other stuff people ignore and/or unpopular music.

I don't see anything wrong with someone making a thread voicing their opinion on why they dislike the current pop music. If people do not want to talk about the topic then they should not participate in the thread. Its one thing if the topic was a response to someone claiming to like pop music..but its not. I happen to agree with the OP which is why I said what I said in the thread. |

He listed mostly mainstream artists as his examples (of the type of music he was referring too) so more than likely he is talking about commercial music. This is not rocket science. |
