I take an icon to be somebody that everyone recognises just from a single image, even years later. Bob Marley is always the first I think of. Even of I didn't listen to Marley, didn't know anything about his life, I'd still know him because his image is still inescapable in our culture.
I could see Kanye West and his fancy sunglasses and clothing, as well as his political moments and public persona, being built to last. Especially now that he's married to Kim Kardashian, I am not a fan of hers but she is also a colossal star and that magazine cover had quite an impact, it could be looked back on as a Marilyn Monroe style pin up photo.
