Of course, this all begs the question of whether or not anybody should care about icon status, as clearly, it's not necessarily related to talent. You just know he cried himself to sleep after he cashed that check.

The problem is that there's a difference between an iconic moment and a person being an icon.
I think of John Lydon as being an iconic person for the reason that he made 2 groundbreaking albums in 2 different genres and regardless of your opinion of him you'd be hard pressed to find too many people who have done that. However one of his iconic moments was when the Sex Pistols appeared on The Grundy Show with Lydon swearing and basically announcing the arrival of punk in the mainstream and whipping up the media and the establishment to mass hysteria. However just because I consider that an iconic moment in music history doesn't mean I don't consider Lydon an icon for doing it.

Everybody who knows Vanilla ice knows that song as well. Even if that one hit by Vanilla ice was bigger than any of hers she has always been a mainstream artist and most ppl can name at least one song from her because she actually had a career not just a one hit single. But even if ppl can't name one of her songs they at least know she was a musician were as Vanilla ice is mostly remembered as a joke from the 90's.

You keep on about this.
I know it's the name of one of her albums, I had no idea it's a single itself and I couldn't for the life of me tell you how the song goes. Shows how iconic it is really.

I was about to say the same thing. Had no idea it was even a song. Face it, BF, Vanilla Ice is more iconic as a joke than Janet Jackson is as a legitimate artist.

"We are a part of a rhythm nation~" then something, something, and that's it. Best song ever.

It's actually a pretty awesome song and video. And it ruled the day back then. When Soulflower made the bold statement that JJ was one of the best selling artists of all time I was all ready to call BS but then I checked and lo and behold, it's true.
