I guess to me, not allowing things to be included into being "music" means music isn't necessarily the best form of aural pleasure. which is a weird phenomenon imo. why not just make it all one? no lets separate it because because because
because its not musical!! oh right. whatever. |

Okay, I'm back. Anyway, this is an interesting discussion but ultimately just a matter of opinion. My opinion is to think that found sounds and silence alone are not music unless part of a larger musical structure -- something with musical notes in it that can be put in a score. Others think differently. That's cool. All's good.

After reading this thread, and researching it a bit, I've come to the conclusion that 4'33' is music. Not my type of music, but music nonetheless. I guess I was looking too closely to the word "silence", and taking it as I saw it. To be fair though, was 4'33' even silence? There was a bunch of different noises from the audience, like coughing and moving about. It's not something I would enjoy listening to, but sure, I'll call it music.

Some are of the opinion that 4'33 is music. Some are of the opinion that 4'33 is not music. Cage accomplished his goal I think. Cage.
