Pretty much. It's just one of those things that gets people entrenched in their beliefs, and rather than compromise they just sort of repeat "I think it's music" or "I don't think it's music" over and over. That's been the last twenty or so pages of this thread.

That's what gave Cage the idea for 4'33'' in the first place.

As far as 4'33", it can be considered music, since the world around us has constant actions, and reactions, which in turn create noise, in which inherently becomes a type of music to the listener.

Well it seems that were back on the topic of 4'33" again, so as grindy put it, the purpose of the piece is to hear the sounds around us all that ambiance no matter where you are, and show the real beauty in between the notes. So I come back to the TedTalks with Mark Applebaum I posted some twenty pages back. Maybe the wrong question is "is it music", when maybe we should ask "is it interesting?".

Does the fact that it was the noted experimental musician John Cage that was behind 4'33 lend it extra credence for those of you proclaiming it as music?
Imagine that Cage never did the piece. It's 1986 and the horrid hair metal band Poison releases an album that contains a 3 minute cut of pure silence. And they go on to "perform" it on their subsequent tour. Would you all be here today validating Poison?

I hadn't heard of john cage before, so I don't think so.
As I said, I needed to give this topic some more thought, and I have. But now I have a question: supposing that it's music, then is it having a bunch of people (not) playing instruments what makes it music? Would you say that the performers are superfluous to it's music-ness, or not? |

As I'm sitting here I'm listening to the steady drip drip drip of the leaky faucet downstairs. I plan on recording it later today and releasing it as my next single. An MTV video will follow.
