But if you know what it is, then aren't you just trying to find it interesting? Like, "Oh, it's '4'33', time to start listening to the sounds of the room." There is no inherent entertainment value to be found, and if you already get the point then what are you really getting from it art-wise? Sounds like the audience would just be trying too hard so people won't think they're Philistines.

Not really, I could imagine scenarios where it would be a boring piece.

this reminds me of a long argument i had with my ex one time. she was an art student and walk talking about one of her classmates and explaining to me that he did a painting where he basically painted his canvas red. and i said that's ****, and she was like explaining to me how its still art cause its expression and red symbolizes blood or some **** and blah blah blah. and i was like fine it's art but it's still ****. i painted my apartment red one time and that was probably more interesting to look at than this **** painting cause it was my first attempt at painting anything and the **** came out blotchy as hell.

"It's art but it's still ****"
Exactly my opinion on that type of art.

Whether it's good isn't really the question though. You can call it **** music, just don't rob it of the music part.

You mean, like, all of them? What on Earth could be stimulating about that? First time it was described to me, I thought "4'33" was interesting. Cool statement that pushes boundaries, etc. After that, why care? What is there left to say? What can I get out of something that I already understand? Besides, I can do that on my own. I can pull up a chair next to a busy road and take in the sounds. Or chill in the woods. Or listen to the droning of my overhead fan. What is so important about doing this in a live music setting?

I'm not sure how I could explain how something is interesting but I found the performance exciting because I hadn't considered those sounds before and they did sound cool in the concert hall.
