21st century psychedelia survivor
 

So William the Bloody's '80s alternative survivor thread just got bumped, and I thought it would be a cool idea to do a similar thing with recent psych groups, if he doesn't mind me stealing his idea. I'll start by naming two bands, and we'll go until we hit sixteen, with a maximum of two each. Then I'll set up polls, and we can do head-to-head matchups.

The criteria would be:

• The band or artist's debut album must have been released in the 21st century.
• The band or artist must have a significant psychedelic aspect to their music.

Anybody up for it? I'm naming Tame Impala and Temples.

Are we talking psych just in the rock realm?

Folk, pop, rock, even jazz - anything goes.

What about electronic?

Electronic is cool too. Anything goes. The idea is to push everyone's boundaries a bit.

Well I nominate Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound (debut: 2005). They're great, fans of psych rock in general owe it to themselves to check them out, I recommend When Sweet Sleep Returned.

And Black Moth Super Rainbow (debut: 2003). An incredibly psych-heavy experiment of dripping electro-pop/rock indie bliss. Also highly recommended to psych fans. They're music is delicious. I'd say go for Start A People.

Although if you'd let Shpongle slide, as all their albums beside the first are from the 21st century, and the debut is only two years away, then scratch Assemble Head and replace them with Shpongle, a vastly extraordinary psych group that (though labelled as psytrance) defies genres. Drawing heavy influence from world music, as well as dub, trance, drum n' bass, and the psychedelic experience in general.

I don't think bending the rules for the first sixteen is a good idea, but tell you what, we'll have Shpongle battle the champion at the end.

Cool. I think you'd like Assemble Head, they stay pretty true to the original psych rock sound while still keeping it fresh.

I don't know if they are strictly Psychedelia since they are a versatile band, with a range of styles. Donovan also did the Lewis Carroll poem set to music, but his version the vocals were back by (finger-picking) Folk guitar, fiddle & piano.
