I ask because you seem to be looking for the credit for disco in totally the wrong places.
You're looking for it in a predominantly rock based environment where rock music is celebrated and occasionally they'll throw in a token artist from some other genre because they sold a lot of records. I wouldn't say it's anti disco, I would say it's anti pop music with disco being a sub genre of that. There were pop bands coming out of the UK who sold ton of records in the U.S. in the 70s & 80s you won't see any of them in this hall of fame either. If you want to see disco get the credit it deserves then look at the music it spawned, that's why I asked you about European club music where disco music is practically worshipped and is a huge influence on what is played in clubs, not just in Europe but in Australia, Japan & South America where club culture is virtually ingrained on people aged around 18-30. The U.S. has never really given club music mainstream attention apart for when disco originally broke, but around the rest of the world it's huge, but you're never going to see that if you look at the music establishment, especially in the U.S. In short you need to expand your horizons a bit further. America is not the world.

I thought bands that followed in the footsteps of Bryan Ferry by wearing suit & tie as New Romanticism. Bands like ABC, Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran - actually I don't know if anyone in Duran Duran wore a tie, but they definitely didn't wear jeans. A Flock Of Seagulls had more futuristic image with their music and haircuts than the debonair man-about-town style of New Romanticism. I considered A Flock Of Seagulls more as Synth Pop/New Wave.

I used the Rock Hall of Fame as an example but the music industry overall does not respect Disco. It is not viewed as a serious musical genre. That bothers me because it is a musical genre and it should be praised and respected. Why is it problematic to voice that? I like Rock music but it is treated as the epitome of all musical genres and quite frankly it is not. |

Yes I read what you said but was just simply clarifying that I only used the RHOF as an example of a lot of the discredit the genre gets in the industry. Award shows like MTV or even VH1 have international spin offs. In most countries the music scene is very similiar to what it is in America. Now of course I am not insisting ALL countries are but if you look at chart positions in other countries and album sells in other countries it is very much the same. The music industry does not praise Disco or recognizes it instead they recognize gimmicky groups like KISS. |

If you're choosing to ignore where it is celebrated and expect the rock press to celebrate it instead then it's your own myopia and ignorance thats causing the problem. It's a bit like me buying Kerrang magazine and complaining there's no folk music in it.

I edited that out because I realize I phrased that statement wrong I think you are confused of whom I am referring too...... Again, I am talking about the MUSIC industry at large. I am not talking specifically talking about the RHOF or even the Rolling Stones magazine. I am referring to the entire music industry. .What I meant to say was that just because a small club group recognizes Disco does not change the fact that the industry does not recognize it and it is not widely respected. What I don't understand about this place is.....It is okay to critique rock bands but its not okay to talk about how other less praised genres never get any credit. I don't see what the problem is in voicing that Disco deserves more respect by the industry. Giving me one example of a club that plays Disco does not change that while I do appreciate the example. Just because one small obscure club plays Disco does not mean I should keep quiet about the lack of respect Disco receives overall. |

Trying to tie this in, ever so slightly, with the topic of the thread...
