The Isley Brothers - Heard and loved their stuff a long time ago, don't really remember how I first discovered them, but usually it's just trawling around the internet for a certain genre I like until I find a band I like.
Zapp - Loved their music after watching many films set in 1980's Cali, and hearing their stuff in the background since they were very popular in the lowrider culture during that time. Also found some of their stuff by finding out that a lot of Hip-Hop acts sampled their work. Ohio Players - Crazy funk band I first heard of through GTA: San andreas's soundtrack. Also heard a small 'Funky Worm' sample in De La Soul's 'Me Myself and I' Outkast - Known them for a long time just simply from hearing their play on the radio. Parliament - Known them because of my interest in Funk music. If you like Funk you'll most likely see Parliament a lot.

1) Killing Joke
I got into this band around 15-16 when I started playing Vampire: The Masquerade RPG. They used some quotes from songs at the start of passages that set the tone and it was enough to pique my interest. I started with their 1994 album Pandemonium which might actually be their most accessible album. 2) 16 Horsepower I got into these guys in 2009 when I dove head first into Gothic Country as I was looking for similar artists through Last.fm and they fast became one of my favourite bands. Wish I had a more meaningful discovery. 3) Elliott BROOD A buddy of mine from work gave me their first album, Ambassador, after he offhandedly heard me spewing the usual "I listen to everything but country" drivel. I really didn't know what to expect but I've always been a fan of minor chord melodies and this band has it in spades. I would also say this was the first time I legitimately thought about taking up the banjo. 4) Devin Townsend In 2001 I got a subscription to Guitar World magazine for Christmas and I remember seeing a picture of Devin showing off his "Made in Canada" tattoo on his calf. The article was about his 2001 solo album Terria which I actually didn't pick up till way later, instead focusing on his Strapping Young Lad project because I was a teenager and that music is absolutely perfect for an awkward pissed off teenager. 5) Opeth I really liked the cover art for Blackwater Park. That's it. It helped that I was starting to get into more progressive metal but I had no idea who or what an Opeth was. |
