I really only spend money on vinyl - can't remember the last time I bought a cd. This is partly due to building my record collection in the past couple years and partly because mp3s have taken over. That said, depending on the album I'm known to save up money for months to buy something I'm really interested in having. The most I've spent is about $65.

Good question. By and large I've never paid more than $15 for a CD. I always try to get them when they're on sale. That said, I'm willing to pay more for "rare" first pressings of classic LP's IF they're in excellent to near-mint condition. Inserts must be included as well if it contained them. Not all albums had them, obviously. It also depends on how long I've been searching for a particular release as well. There are many variables.
For example, in early 1991 I was browsing my local record store at the time and stumbled upon the original pressing of the first KISS album ( catalog # NB 9001 ) WITHOUT the song 'Kissin' Time'. I had learned that this version of the album wasn't available for very long, roughly for five months between Feb.-July of 1974. After this, 'Kissin' Time' was added to future pressings with a new catalog number ( NB 7001 ). The song remains on all current formats of the album to this day. Anyway, they wanted $200 for the "original", way out of my price range back then. And I didn't get to see the condition of it because I wasn't allowed to open the "re-sealed" plastic. However, I NEVER saw it again until November of 2003. I negotiated with a private dealer who had it in his collection and sold it to me for $50. While not "near-mint", it's in better condition than I probably give it credit for. It's been played, but well taken care of I'm told by more experienced record collectors. Especially considering how many hands it's likely passed through over the years. All in all, to this day I've never seen a better copy of it since. If I ever do, I would probably pay up to $100 MAXIMUM, again, IF it's in TRULY near-mint condition. In short order, it better look like it did in 1974 fresh out of the shrinkwrap! Needless to say, I have yet to "stumble" on to one like that ( ) ! But I digress. It's still Kiss' BEST album EVER, to my thinking. A timeless classic. But that's another topic entirely ( ). Great thread. Last edited by Musicwhore A-Z; 09-09-2014 at 03:28 PM. |

I will pay whatever it takes to get the album I want, although I try extremely hard to get certain albums for cheap. For example: I purchased a copy of Staind's debut "Tormented" for about $33, money well spent in my opinion. Another example, I spent $26 on an import Metallica "St. Anger" single from Japan, has the title track and 4 Ramones covers, also bought another version of the single from Japan that only had the title track and 1 other Ramones cover not available on the other single for $18.

depends on CD. For easily accessible titles, $10-$20. For obscure titles, OOP titles, limited run titles, original titles, boxed sets... it varies depending on how much I want it, and so on...
I could never pay hundreds for something, but I would pay a large sum for a select few.

I only buy physical copies of albums on vinyl, since I don't have anything to play CDs with on a regular basis (and CDs are kind of a rip-off anyway) so here are my rules for how much I'll usually pay for an album -
If it's something I kind of want, and there's probably a billion copies out there and it might not be my only chance at all, but it seems like a good idea at the time: No more than $5 if it's in great condition; no more than $2 if it's kind of beat up in some way or another. If it's something I've been searching for in the past few months and it's in really nice condition or a considerably rare find: No more than $10. If it's an album that I consider a missing piece to my collection/an absolute must, terrific find, excellent condition: No more than $20. Picture discs/limited collectible editions (with a rating of VG+ or better): No more than $30. Keep in mind that I refuse to reduce myself to picking up shitty vinyl. I don't like scuffed/scratched records at all. I've put a lot of love, time, and money into my collection.
