Favorite COVER ALBUMS? (not album covers)
Hey guys, first time posting. I am a big fan of cover song of all styles and genres. From old Jazz standards to radio pop to death metal.
What are some of ya'lls favorite Cover albums? I've been listening to 'Explains It All' - Four Year Drive. It's a really fun cover album of mostly 90's songs done by a pop-punk band. |
Dylanesque by Bryan Ferry was pretty slick. I know Bob's probably sick to death of people covering his tunes but in all fairness, Ferry's versions of "The Times They Are-a-Changin'" and "All I Really Want to Do" were pretty damn strong.
Shame he decided to put in "All Along the Watchtower" too though. What's he gonna do? go up against Jimi on that score? Get outta here! |
'Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, A Paris', Martha Wainwright's Edith Piaf album

Helloween - Metal Jukebox is pretty cool. They did a great job of capturing the original sound of each tune, and the flavor of Helloween hints through just enough to make it likable but still their own.
Spoiler for Deep Purple and Beatles covers:
Anthrax - Anthems is another. I'n not real keen on some of the singing, but their version of Journey's "Keep On Runnin" is outstanding. Strongest vocals of the whole set anyway. The album is a bit short, and from what I've read it's more of a band-aid between albums. Not bad though. Spoiler for Thin Lizzy and Journey covers:

Covers albums can be fun, but they're generally too disposable for me to really have favorites. I just discovered Laibach's Let It Be album though, which covers the entirety of the Beatles' Let It Be. It's a pretty out-there, awesome album.

Dub Side of the Moon is pretty great too.

Hands down, Marc Ribot's album "Saints". He covers spirituals, Ayler tunes, and The Beatles among others. He strips the songs down to solo acoustic guitar and pumps them full of his style. It's pretty awesome.

Not the full album but enough of a taster to get it. |
Claw Hammer "Q - Are we not men? A - we are not Devo!"
It's a straight punk cover of the Devo album of almost the same name. The thing is that I *HATE* that Devo album. However, I love the Claw Hammer version. My conclusion is that Devo can write good songs, but I don't like the way they perform them. Also, I totally enjoy have a cover of a cover ("Satisfaction") on there. |
