time to get real

26. Gavin Bryars - The Sinking of the Titanic (1990)

although he originally wrote and release a shorter version in 1975...i prefer the longer 1990 version pictured above

inspired by the story of the band that played as the ship went down....this piece of modern classical is nothing short of pure emotion....with the concept of what it would sound like and how it would feel to hear and see this amazing feat of humanity....it follows the band...playing Autumn all the way to their final resting place on the ocean floor

from wikipedia
"The work was radically reworked from the earlier piece and included fragments of interviews with survivors, Morse code signal played on woodblocks and the sound of the iceberg as it collided with the ship amongst other new sources. This performance also included two ensembles of children: an all-girl string ensemble, which included two of Bryars' daughters, and the Wenhaston Boys Choir. The work was performed in a Napoleonic-era water tower; the musicians performed in the basement of the tower and the audience listened on the ground floor. The empty top floors of the water tower acted as a giant reverberation chamber."

the song itself opens with the song Autumn and takes the listener on an amazing and emotion journey...the first time you listen to this piece you can almost always hear a pin drop when it ends.....it leaves you speechless and heart broken but strangely optimistic

this is one of those albums that is a true testament to just how powerful music can be and should be heard by everyone at least once
