Not sure if my participation in this has scared everyone off or made it a suddenly less cool thread, but anyway...

133. "Black Sabbath" --- Black Sabbath --- 1970

Need I say more? If you want to hear the first demonic mewling screams from the baby that would grow up to be heavy metal, this is the only place to start. When those heavy guitar chords ring out and the rain lashes down against a backdrop of mournful bells, you know you're in the operating theatre watching in horrified fascination as something truly beautiful and terrible is born, and the world will never be the same.

And don't tell me "Paranoid" is better, even after it won the smackdown in my journal!

The song Black Sabbath is doom metal's mission statement.

I mean Paranoid is better, but Master of Reality is better than either.

That's a strange way to spell Sabatoge.

134. Moon Safari - [Blomljud] (2008)

A colossal effort from a tightly knit bunch of Swedes who have schooled themselves on the best aspects of everyone from Yes to The Beach Boys and CSN&Y but somehow end up sounding like something completely new. Modern prog doesn't get albums with this much panache and infectious optimism too often, but the ones that do emerge are amazing experiences that will certainly last the test of time. And in this case, that amazing experience even features five part vocal harmonies! I'd put it right up there with Milliontown by Frost* as the best progressive rock album of the Noughties.

135. George Duke - A Brazilian Love Affair (1980)

The Mt. Everest of jazz rock / Brazilian samba crossover and essential cruise control soundtrackage even if you aren't much of a jazz person. Dukey has lots of other great albums, but his keyboard runs here are especially inspired. And even on the slower stuff, he has some killer guests like percussionist Airto Moreira and singer-songwriter Milton Nascimento to keep things rollin'.

136) BADBADNOTGOOD - BBNG2 (2012)

BADBADNOTGOOD are a instrumental hip-hop/jazz trio from Canada and in their short career have already made three great albums. BBNG2 being there 2nd album up'd the ante in every department from the first in the playing, arrangements, song choice, and originals. It's an album that feels rooted in tradition, yet intent on uprooting tradition. And album worth many listens and one I'm glad I took the time out of my life to do so.

Isn't this thread for less conventional albums? Ones you wouldn't find in your average list?
