Why Have I Never Heard Anyone Say that the Stooges Were Overrated?
I've heard people say that just about every band associated with punk or proto-punk were overrated. There are all sorts of people on this site who I've seen bash the Velvet Underground, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Ramones, etc, etc, etc. Being a site of mainly alternative kids classic rock gets more than its fair share of detractors. Being a site with also a fair share of non-alternative kids I also see the opposite plenty. Prog rock? Yeah. The Beatles, one of the Golden Gods of rock 'n' roll, gets trashed almost constantly, either honestly or by people trying to be different. They get plenty of worship obviously, but plenty of the other kind too. There just isn't any consensus on who sucks and who doesn't.
And yet, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything other than that Iggy Pop is a god and that the Stooges are the beating heart and soul of rock music. I'm sure plenty of people aren't that big on them, but I've never seen anybody go so far as to actually trash them. Is this band just one of the only ones around that everybody and their mother can at least agree most certainly does not suck? Disclaimer: I ****ing love the Stooges and will likely commit suicide if I ever meet Iggy, as my life can only go down hill from there. @ Mods - If the mods feel the need to merge this with whatever Stooges thread already exists then that's cool, but I just wanted to start this specific discussion in a way that people could see without having to actually click on the thread. So if it's cool I'd like to keep this thread separate.

Because they are not overrated, or played out, and he's inspired every sit up ever done anywhere that's why.

I've found myself lately being bored listening to Stooges albums. Don't get me wrong but I don't find him as innovative as everybody else does. For the time they are a fantastic band, but playability over time has grown to be tiresome. You are welcome. YAWN

None of that amounts to much with concern to me. He has really lost alot of vocal tone and hes become irrelevant to me, besides his checkered past. Its like any band of the 70's, their heydays have long past and now people are holding onto memories and past ability. If you think hes as good vocally as say even the mid 80's you are sadly mistaken. But I think Batlord's premise for the thread was based on his past and what he added to the music industry and I cannot forsake what he has done in the industry he is a pretty mammoth figure in the DIY ethos.

See I dont always think voices get worse with age. Now there are a large number that have.
As for Iggy, I like him with the stooges in his glory days.

Their first two albums are massively overrated, but I still hold Raw Power as one of the pinnacle punk rock albums of all time, even if the piano part in the titular song grates after a while.
