Agree about Benji. Love Mark Kozelek, but this was easily his worst lyrical performance for me. Super lame at times. And everythiing else wasnt enough to make it worthwhile. His album with Jimmy LaValle from last year was much much better.

I can definitely see it getting old after repeated listens, but I was pretty blown away when I heard it for the first time yesterday. I need to listen to a lot more of his work, I've only heard benji and songs for a blue guitar by red house painters. If you think its his worst lyrical output, I'm in for a treat (though that does sound strange to say because of how vehemently sad his lyrics are)

I haven't heard much of 2014 yet to be honest
I'm still busy within the depths of my backlog, but so far I've really liked:

Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire For No Witness
Sharon Van Etten - Are We There
The Antlers - Familiars
Sun Kil Moon - Benji
St. Vincent - S/T
Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
My Fictions - Stranger Songs

I'm way behind

Am I the only one who couldn't get past the first track of Benji? It just sounded god awful.

Oh yeah theyre sad, but so is all of his stuff haha. Down Colorful Hill, Rollercoaster and Ocean Beach are physically taxing on me; theyre just so emotionally draining. Ghosts of the Great Highway is also magnificent and possibly contains my favorite song of theirs (Carry Me Ohio). They're on a whole new level of depression for me. Paralyzing.

I mean, I should say, I still like parts Benji, but i dont think it's nearly as good as most other albums that Kozelek is involved with.

It's definitely not for everyone. I personally liked it. The simplicity of the instrumentals and the lyricism manages to capture a nostalgic/calming atmosphere for me. Jim Wise/Carissa were my favorites off it.

I rarely listen to something I don't like, however.

I didn't listen to Benji more than once, and it was swiftly recycle binned.

Well that's not giving it much of a chance now is it.

But I could definitely see people not liking it. I think it's brilliant.

There's too much music out there for me to bother listening to albums I don't particularly like more than maybe twice.
