Default bands/artists that didn't fulfill their promise...

ok, this is highly subjective....not looking for arguments, but would be interested to see some opinions about bands/singers/musicians etc. who for whatever reason didn't live up to their initial potential. could be because they split before really making an impact, or could be because they never lived up to their early material, or some other reason

what got me thinking about this was Garbage. I was already interested before I heard them just knowing Butch Vig was involved, who was already some kind of hero in my mind just for his production work on Nevermind and Siamese Dream. and then I remember being impressed with their debut single 'Vow'.

Good tune with some nods to Hole and maybe even a bit of MBV on the intro. But that seemed to be it, I never really liked another tune they did. It all became a bit electro-rock-pop by numbers and I got tired of Shirley Manson's twisted-girl-next-door type image. also I got a bit sick of Only Happy When It Rains after the 210588924th time of hearing it, that song got so much airplay I hope I never hear it again

my 2nd choice is Primal Scream which might seem a bit odd because they're massive and musically respected by loads of people. The reason is their initial 'promise' was their debut album Sonic Flower Groove, which is to this day one of the best jangly-indie-guitar pop albums I've ever heard.

The problem is they never sounded like this ever again. Their 2nd (self titled) album was more like standard blues rock, then they went all dancey on Screamadelica, then Blues Rocky again on Give Out But Don't Give Up, and seem to change styles with every album since then, which I respect, but they never persued their original direction which pisses me off(!)

so feel free to add on any artists you think qualify for this thread

first one was excellent so I would like to hear this, if it ever comes out. Doom and madlib have both got impressive back catalogues though, so not sure it really counts.

not sure who that guy in the pic is.

Zoetrope flopped after their third (official) album. Their contract had them slated for quite a few more, but they packed it up for good after that. They ended up owing Jam Productions a lot of money, and I watched it all happen firsthand.

Apples in Stereo - I really liked their first album, there's some beautiful psychedelic pop tunes on it. I checked out a few more and they sounded like Blink 182 or something. No idea what happened to them. Awful.

Ride started off great as well but went badly downhill after Nowhere in my opinion.

Same with Dinosaur Jr after Bug.

I think Garbage lived up to their name. Sorry I just could never stand them.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

Really? I wasn't a huge fan of the newest album but the one before that was pretty good, imo. And almost every album Dino did after Bug had at least a few good tracks on um, albeit with some really lousy ones.

I agree with Garbage idk why but i had high hopes for that band but they didn't quite deliver.

Same with Weezer i used to love them but they kinda peaked by their 2nd album imo.

I dated someone who is apparently related to him so if that's true it totally runs in the fam

Electronic didn't live up to my expectations of being THE BEST THING EVER TO COME OUT OF MUSIC what with it combining two of my faves so I like to pretend it never happened
