Frownland wanted a discussion on Oneohtrix Point Never's albums, and I guess I'll put it here.
Oneohtrix Point Never 1. R Plus Seven 2. Replica 3. Returnal 4. Instrumental Tourist After going back and listening to Replica again I found it mostly enjoyable but just not as interesting as R Plus Seven manages to consistently be. Replica has a lot of darker ambiance with strange, fragmented beats but the tracks are mostly repetitive and don't go anywhere. Not that this is always a bad thing, it's definitely the kind of album I can zone the **** out on especially while doing drugs. It has some great tracks like Sleep Dealer, the title track, Child Soldier...but there are also tracks that do very little for me like Nassau, Submersible, and Remember which is ironically not very memorable. But then I go compare it to R Plus Seven, with extremely varied mind-blowing adventures like Americans (my favorite OPN track by far), Zebra, Chrome Country...I love how the tracks on R Plus Seven have a semblance of structure while still maintaining the trademark experimentation and jumbled, cut up sounds. Even the more ambient tracks like Along and Inside World convey an almost jungley vibe which I can seriously dig on. It just works better for me the whole way through

Let's see, for OPN I'd go
Replica Returnal Russian Mind R Plus Seven Betrayed in the Octagon Zones Without People Transmat Memories Instrumental Tourist I really like R Plus Seven as well, but like your problem with Replica there are a few tracks that seem like filler to me. Replica is more texture based and loopy than R Plus Seven, but even though RPS is more melodically based, Replica still has a lot of beautiful and trippy melodies. Funny how my favourites all start with R.

Damn how'd you get ahold of all those other albums? Haven't been able to find any others, I'd be interested in Russian Mind if you think it's also better than R Plus Seven.

It's on Spotify and I dled a couple off of blogspot a while back. Haven't replaced them on my new computer though. RIP my 20k song music collection.

I'm such a nooblord, I still only listen to music via the outdated method of actually going out and trying to find a download so that I can have everything in my iTunes library lol. Don't think Spotify is even installed on my computer. Maybe I should do that

Spotify saves me so much disk space. Totally worth it.

Returnal is nuckin futs man. Way more abrasive than anything else he's done, I imagine it'd be right up your alley.

Best to Worst Discographies
Basically, you take a band, and order the albums you've heard from best to worst. Original idea, no.
Led Zeppelin LZ4 LZ1 LZ3 Houses of the Holy Pure Blues (bootleg) BBC Sessions The Song Ramains the Same How The West Was Won Ottawa Sunshine (bootleg) LZ2 Florida Sunshine (bootleg) Physical Graffiti Live on Blueberry Hill (bootleg0 Royal Albert Hall 1970 Texas International Pop Festival (bl) Ballcrusher (bl) In through the Out Door Presence Coda I still haven't heard Celebration Day. |
