Default What are some music marketing tactics?

In other words, what are ways that companies use to promote albums? Have any specific examples?

So off the top of my head, lady gaga's latest album had a billboard or two, on the streets

All that comes to mind is Tv and radio appearances by the artist talking about wthvr topic the host is talking about and then at the end they plug their cd.

Or if its in a late night show they play a song and then do a little interview and at the end they plug their cd again. lol

Purposely leaking songs to test the strength of songs as potential singles.

Releasing an entire album without telling anyone online or in general

Making appearances, performing at award shows, performing at events, etc.

Appearing in movies, sitcoms, television shows, etc

Doing an interview or documentary.

Leaking rare photos of a singer to the press so they can stay in the headlines

Creating made up stories about a singer to the press so they can stay in the headlines

Saying things like " I am a feminist" "I am a social activist" "I am a role model" "I am a politician" although you really aren't or do not believe in those things

Endorsing other brands such as food, perfumes, clothes, etc.

We can talk about this all night long because there are so many marketing tactics. All these things collectively impact a singers or artists career and record sells for the good or for the bad.

So if I was an unknown artist and wanted to promote my music and make a name for myself, I could release an album without telling anyone and become a superstar?

I am obviously referring to mainstream artists with that statement. Some of those marketing tactics do not apply to all artists and are only for certain types of artists.

So in this particular case, if a established popular mainstream artist did something like that, that would be for marketing reasons versus an up and coming unknown artist.
